Although Shropshire could be considered a quiet corner of England, this rural county near the Welsh border has plenty of visitor attractions, a rich cultural and historical heritage, beautiful gardens and fascinating museums.

Shropshire has many picturesque historical towns and villages, for example Ludlow, which John Betjeman once described as “the loveliest town in England”. This bustling market town has a huge number of listed buildings, mostly from the Georgian period, fine restaurants, traditional inns and speciality shops.

Shrewsbury, the counties principal town is of Saxon heritage which was further developed by the Tudors. Located close to the River Severn the town is renowned for its castle, rising spires, abbey and green open parkland. It's also the perfect place to see some wonderful medieval buildings.

The county is the epitome of the most perfect rural countryside you can find, a place that has been formed over millions of years into a tranquil landscape of rolling hills and river gorges. Speaking of which the Iron Bridge Gorge Museums are a series of museums located in the Iron Bridge Gorge near the town of Telford. It's here that the beginning of the industrial revolution first took hold. Spanning the River Severn the outdoor and indoor museums offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The regions strategic location tells the tale of a turbulent past, evidenced by the hill forts, earthworks and castles which can be found throughout the Welsh borders. These include Ludlow Castle which was built in the 11th century and the Iron Age Hill Fort at Oswestry which covers some forty acres. Moreton Corbet Castle built in the 13th century was later extended in the 16th century. As well as these fascinating structures to Shropshire's past, the county has some lovely English Heritage properties like Stokesay Castle.

The Laurels is a superb example of a large, Grade II Listed town house, which is decorated to a very good standard, located in the very small, friendly town of Bishops Castle. The holiday home is within walking distance of the many interesting little shops in the main street, two banks, PO and five pubs, two of which are famous for brewing their own beer. Set on a working farm, this detached stone barn is located just 6 miles from historic Ludlow and lies on the edge of the village of Stoke St Milborough, which nestles between the Clee Hill and the Brown Clee Hills in south Shropshire, in an AONB. Stoke Court farm Barn is decorated and furnished to a high standard, whilst retaining many original features including beams and stable walls. It offers beautiful family accommodation with additional faciities for disabled guests, and makes an excellent holiday base for exploring the local area.
The 200-acre farm is a working beef and sheep farm, and within the grounds of the holiday barn is a newly discovered 17th-century formal garden with its prospect viewing mound. There is also a Sensory Garden to stimulate sound, sight, touch and smell. The latter has been developed in association with DEFRA.
Nearby, historic Ludlow provides a wealth of interest for any visitor. John Betjeman described it as ‘the loveliest town in England’. Country Life also paid tribute, calling it ‘the most vibrant small town in the country’. It has lively markets, food fairs and speciality shops. There are many Michelin restaurants and Ludlow has rightly become known as the gastronomic capital of Shropshire. The Ludlow Marches Food and Drink Festival is held every September. The town boasts over 500 listed buildings, mostly Georgian or half-timbered houses as well as a castle, once the home of kings, now a centre for festivals, events and open-air theatre performances.
An unusual day out can be enjoyed at the Secret Hills Discovery Centre, which traces the geological history of the Shropshire Hills, and is housed in an unusual turf-roofed building designed to echo the hill forts found in the surrounding countryside. A simulated hot air balloon flight over the Wrekin in the north to the Stiperstones in the south forms the central attraction of the Centre. A good day out can also be had at the Acton Scott working farm and musuem. Leominster, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge and mid-Wales are all within easy driving distance. Fishing, walking, horse riding are all available and Ludlow golf course incorporates the Ludlow National Hunt Racecourse. Shop 6 miles.

A little further afield, guests can visit the counties of Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and explore the towns of Tenbury Wells, Bromyard, Leominster, Malvern, Hereford and Bewdley. Alternative places of interest include the Severn Valley Steam Railway, Cardingmill Valley in Church Stretton, Acton Scott Working Farm Museum and the Iron Bridge Gorge Museum.
