Oxford University is actually the oldest English-speaking university in the world, being in existence for more than nine centuries as a place of learning. The colleges of Oxford offer some stunning examples of the classical architecture of its time and there's plenty to explore.

The most famous college is probably Christ Church whose Great Hall inspired Hogwarts Hall in the Harry Potter films and the meadow nearby is grazed by rare breed cattle. Everyone has their own favourite college; Magdalen is particularly famous as its tower dominates the high street. Or you could save yourself a flight to Venice and see Oxford's very own Bridge of Sighs; it connects the main buildings of Hertford College.

Radcliffe Camera is one of the most recognisable buildings in Oxfordshire, and makes up part of the Bodleian Library. Another favourite for visitors is Carfax Tower; climb to the top and you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view over Oxford.

Oxfordshire is also home of one of the greatest palaces in the world - Blenheim Palace, a world heritage site and a 'must see'. With spectacular walks around the grounds and access to a large proportion of the Palace rooms themselves, it provides a fascinating day out.

There are some beautiful manor houses and castles that can be visited in the county. Broughton Castle was described as “about the most beautiful castle in all England” by historian Sir Charles Oman in 1898 and remains just as breath-taking today. Sulgrave Manor and Upton House are both well worth visiting, especially on a fine day when you can explore the grounds and gardens in the sunshine.

A visit to Oxfordshire wouldn't be complete without a trip out to see the famous White Horse Hill; this stylised representation of a horse in the chalk bedrock is thought to be the oldest hill figure in Britain. If you've had enough history and 'high culture' take a drive through Headington to spot the Shark in the Roof, or head over to Crocodiles of the World, the UK's only crocodile zoo. For speed and excitement, you could go karting, but for a slower-paced way to spend an afternoon you could go fishing, walking or cycling alongside the scenic Oxford Canal.
