A cottage holiday stay in Northamptonshire give you the perfect opportunity to enjoy an action-packed break where you could try white water rafting and motor racing one day, and tank-driving the next. But don't worry if you prefer to live life at a slightly slower pace, there are plenty of relaxing ways to while away your days in this scenic area.

The Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne is a leisurely way to spend a lazy, hazy summer day, look around the award-winning museum and then enjoy lunch on the waterfront. If the weather is not on your side why not head over to 78 Derngate; this house was remodelled by the world-famous designer and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh in his iconic Modernist style.

When you stay in a holiday cottage you have the option of eating out, packing picnics or cooking your own family favourites and when it comes to grocery shopping, Northampton's Market Square hosts one of the longest running markets on record in the UK. There are some stunning historic buildings throughout Northamptonshire that simply shouldn't be missed: Althorp House, Cottesbrooke Hall & Gardens and Delapre Abbey should all be on your list.

Why not book ahead and experience a day's tank-driving at Tanks A Lot, or visit the famous Silverstone Race Course. You could even head down to the Nene Whitewater Centre to try your hand at rafting, canoeing or tubing with trained coaches on hand to help you negotiate the rapids.

For a slightly calmer taste of life by the water, take a walk around Corby Boating Lake, right in the heart of Northampton. You can watch the model boats while the kids tackle the playground, be sure to look out for swans, herons, gulls and even kingfishers.

For walking enthusiasts, there is a huge network of footpaths, byways and bridleways throughout Northamptonshire that allow you to appreciate the area's stunning scenery, from rolling hills and lush woodland, to farmland and moorland, passing through picturesque villages and historic towns.
