This traditional farmhouse lies half a mile beyond the outskirts of Alston on the borders of Northumbria and Cumbria, central in the North Pennines, an AONB. Alston is said to be England’s highest market town. Fishing, riding and golf nearby. Follow some of the local rambles or the Pennine Way. The glorious coast and countryside of Northumbria is within travelling distance, as are the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Borders. Water sports at Talkin and Keilder Water. Gateshead, only an hour away, has a large shopping centre with restaurants and ten screen cinema. Or just stay home and relax in front of the fire and eat together with family and friends. Greta Bridge is a landmark hamlet, south of the A66 trans-Peninne road and only 4 miles south-east of the market town of Barnard Castle. Built on the site of a Roman settlement, and beside the pretty River Greta, is the neighbouring Morritt Arms Hotel (a 17th-century coaching inn, where Charles Dickens stayed whilst researching for his novel Nicholas Nickleby), which serves delicious food.
There is much to do and see in the surrounding area with Darlington a mere 18 miles distant. Within an hour’s drive there are many racecourses including Sedgefield, Catterick, Wetherby, York and Newcastle to name but a few. Scotch Corner is 9 miles, and Teeside 30 miles.
