Find cottages in HoltVisit Holt

Holt is a beautiful Georgian market town on the North Norfolk coast; an area of outstanding natural beauty with some of the cleanest beaches in the UK. This lovely village lies very close to the coast with Sheringham and Cromer a short distance to the east and the beautiful north Norfolk coast stretching away to the west.

The town, which can easily be explored on foot, is located on wooded high ground, and its name is believed to come from the Anglo-Saxon word for woodland. Most of the original medieval town was destroyed in a fire in 1708, and all but the church was rebuilt in Georgian style, the dominant style of the day. The Norman church was repaired and retained.

Visit the Holt War Memorial and the pineapple-topped obelisk and take a stroll around the country Park, Holt Hall and Estate, Holt Lowes or Spout Hills. Holt Country Park, situated a short walk from the town, is a beautiful native broadleaf and Scots Pine woodland, which supports a variety of flora and fauna. Holt Lowes, an area of heathland to the south of Holt, is also an important wildlife area. The 'Poppy Line' of the preserved North Norfolk Railway has a terminus just outside the town.

There are numerous antique shops in the town. Holt Summer festival, a week-long arts festival, runs in July. The town centre is beautifully decorated and lit up during Christmas, and the lights are believed to be the best in the country.

The nearby coast has many beautiful beaches. Morston and Blakeney are closest, with the larger resorts of Cromer and Sheringham a slightly further drive along the coast. Birdwatching, walking, driving along the scenic coast road and sampling the local seafood are among the activities available along the coast.

Check out Holt holiday cottages for great accommodation in the area, and see for yourself what this beautiful area of Norfolk is all about.
