A cottage holiday provides the perfect base for exploring this varied area, whether you're looking for a restful and relaxing break or an exciting adventure with friends or family Lancashire is a hidden gem and provides a great self-catering holiday destination.

The county has many facets; wild and beautiful countryside, seaside character, bustling cities and remote rural landscapes.

Wherever you choose to stay, there's plenty to see and do. You could visit Clitheroe's Norman Keep and enjoy the view over the surrounding area to Pendle Hill, made famous by the legend of its witches. Don't leave this quaint market town without a visit to D.Byrne and Co. where you can explore the cellars of this quirky Victorian wine shop and choose a tipple to enjoy back at your cottage after supper.

The historic city of Lancaster offers great shopping and tempting restaurants as well as a famous castle, where you can enjoy an exciting tour of the courtrooms, cells and ancient towers. When you've finished at the castle, why not take a walk around the beautiful Williamson Park with its butterfly house and copper-topped Memorial.

Lancashire offers plenty of coastline to explore, most famously, the bustling seaside resort of Blackpool with its tower and the Pleasure Beach theme park. You could head South to picturesque Lytham St Anne's, or North to the massive expanse of Morecambe Bay. Don't miss the chance to visit Carnforth Station to have a cup of tea in the cafe and play out your own version of 'Brief Encounter' under the station clock.

Close to the small village of Hurst Green visit the stunning Stonyhurst College. This prestigious school is famous as a film location and has many literary associations: Arthur Conan Doyle is a former pupil and it is also reported that J.R.R.Tolkien wrote part of The Lord of the Rings here.

If walking is your thing you could tackle a section of the scenic Ribble Way during your stay. This wildlife rich trek follows the River Ribble along its valley, traditionally walked from mouth to source. Why not take the little ones along to Bowland's Wild Boar Park where they'll feed chicks and see boar, deer, meerkats and even a white wallaby as well as enjoying a tractor ride.

Lancashire is waiting to welcome you - take a look at our selection of holiday cottages in Lancashire today.

Cowdber Barn Ref: LQL

In lovely surroundings of peaceful open countryside, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this award-winning, detached barn conversion, with its own small garden, is built around a cobbled courtyard and reached by a ¾-mile long farm track. Ingenious design has retained the barn’s unique character, while creating very spacious and well-equipped accommodation, ideal for holidays at any time of year. Set away from the farmyard, it is surrounded by farmland where sheep and cows quietly graze. There are wonderful walks straight from the door, with the fells and mighty Ingleborough in sight. At Ingleton (6 miles), there are miles of paths with steps and bridges along a wooded valley where waterfalls abound, and nearby White Scar Caves display classic features of limestone caverns. The very pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is just 4 miles away, offering shops, inns, restaurants and a golf course.
Cowder Barn is ideally located between two National Parks – the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District – both within easy touring distance and offering some of England’s most dramatic scenery. Rushing rivers flow down the main dales of Wensleydale, Swaledale and Wharfedale, surrounded by the high peaks of the Pennines, and high waterfalls, such as Hardraw Force near Hawes, make spectacular sights. Everywhere grey-stone villages blend effortlessly into an unspoilt landscape. The Lakes offer a land of exciting contrasts – high mountains and deep lakes in an ever-changing array of colours. Fishing and water sports can be enjoyed, or for the less energetic, sheepdog trials, Cumberland wrestling and fell races make good spectator sports. The coast is easily accessible, with the wide sandy beach at Morecambe only 16 miles away. Shops 4 miles, pub 1 mile.

Sitting-room with open fire and French door to garden. Large kitchen with dining area and wood-burning stove. Large walk-in larder. Utility with separate toilet.
