Find cottages in FreshwaterVisit Freshwater

Freshwater is located in the far western tip of the island and has a picturesque bay and characteristic chalk white cliffs; perfect for dramatic cliff-top walks and exploration of this lovely corner of the Isle of Wight.

Freshwater Bay is an idyllic cove with a pebbled beach and beautiful clear waters. Sitting on the English Channel, it also provides a spectacular backdrop to the dramatic crashing waves around the famous Stag and Mermaid Rocks, two imposing chalk slabs that have tumbled to the sea from the nearby white cliffs.

From the pebbly beach you can wander along a coastal path up to Tennyson Down, where you will discover the Tennyson monument and appreciate the amazing views across the island and out to sea, taking in the iconic 'Needles' chalk stacks and lighthouse that sit amongst the dramatic waves.

Up in Freshwater village, you'll find all the local facilities you could wish for in a cottage holiday destination. There is a bustling shopping centre with quirky, independent shops alongside popular high street names and there are plenty of places to eat and drink to enjoy the fresh local produce.

Take the children down to the Needles Meteorite at Compton Bay and search at low tide for dinosaur footprints or join one of the boats that take visitors out to the Needles from Yarmouth and Alum Bay. The chairlift at Needles Park offers visitors a spectacular view of the coloured sands and spiky cliffs.

This delightful period farmhouse, one of a pair, nestles peacefully in the Hamstead Heritage Coast – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, rich in wildlife and birds. In a stunning conservation area, the holiday property is a short walk to the historic Newtown Creek, and set in woodlands, it offers direct access onto bridle, cycle and walk ways. The farmhouse was originally farm cottages to Hamstead Grange and parts of the property are believed to date back to Tudor times, when the grange was owned by the Monks of Quarr Abbey on the island. Island attractions include The Needles, with chair lift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. The 17th-century Calbourne Water Mill, Carisbrooke Castle, plus Osborne House and Gardens are a short drive away. Historic Yarmouth is worthy of a visit and the island can be easily explored from the open-top buses that stop regularly at various collection points across the whole island.
