Sitting on the English Channel, it also provides a spectacular backdrop to the dramatic crashing waves around the famous Stag and Mermaid Rocks, two imposing chalk slabs that have tumbled to the sea from the nearby white cliffs.

From the pebbly beach you can wander along a coastal path up to Tennyson Down, where you will discover the Tennyson monument and appreciate the amazing views across the island and out to sea, taking in the iconic 'Needles' chalk stacks and lighthouse that sit amongst the dramatic waves.

Up in Freshwater village, you'll find all the local facilities you could wish for in a cottage holiday destination. There is a bustling shopping centre with quirky, independent shops alongside popular high street names and there are plenty of places to eat and drink to enjoy the fresh local produce.

Take the children down to the Needles Meteorite at Compton Bay and search at low tide for dinosaur footprints or join one of the boats that take visitors out to the Needles from Yarmouth and Alum Bay. The chairlift at Needles Park offers visitors a spectacular view of the coloured sands and spiky cliffs.
