The county of Hampshire in the south east of England has a southern coast that takes in Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington and two national parks; New Forest National Park and South Downs National Park.

Here you'll find fascinating cities, historic towns and picturesque villages. Lovely areas of protected forest and rolling chalk downs, Blue Flag beaches and a rich maritime heritage.

Portsmouth has connections with Britain's naval traditions that go back hundreds of years and the city's historic dockyard offers a fantastic insight into this maritime history. See the HMS Victory, explore the Mary Rose Museum and then take a tour of the harbour or maybe appreciate the great views across the Solent from the 170 metre high Spinnaker Tower.

Just along the coast Hayling Island offers great family entertainment with a Blue Flag beach, rollercoaster and sea front railway; a great traditional seaside day out.

The New Forest National Park has 218 square miles of protected landscapes and is a wonderful playground for walkers, cyclists and horse riding with 146 miles of marked trails, pubs and tea shops. It is of course also home to the famous New Forest ponies. Get along to the New Forest Centre at Lyndhurst to plan your visit.

The chalk hills of the South Downs National Park also provides the perfect setting for wonderful adventures by foot, bike or horse, or maybe try out hand gliding or paragliding. Within the bounds of the national park is Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield, here you'll find plenty of family activities and the South Downs Way.

Situated on the edge of the South Downs the historic city of Winchester, one time ancient capital of England, has a fascinating history that includes a magnificent 11th century cathedral and associations with King Arthur's Round Table at the Great Hall. Also of historical interest is Romsey on the banks of the River Test, with its medieval streets and Norman Abbey.

Literary lovers will be delighted by Jane Austen's house in Chawton. Now a museum, it's the perfect opportunity to explore the beloved author's life and see how she found her unique inspiration in Hampshire.

Set in a forested and tranquil area on the edge of the popular village of Burley within the New Forest National Park, the cottage forms part of the owner’s grand house, has its own entrance and parking, and is accessed by a forest road. The cottage has direct access to the forest next to an Iron Age fort and is within short walking distance of panoramic views of the forest - a scenic picnic site. The property has been finished to a high standard and offers a very comfortable holiday home with walled garden.
The village centre, ¾ mile, has pubs, tea rooms, village store and is an ideal place for enjoying the New Forest. The unspoilt forest and heathland with wandering ponies and cattle is what makes the New Forest famous. Miles of beautiful walks are available, or alternatively the surrounding area can be explored by car or on bicycle via the many cycle paths - discovering some of the appealing villages, towns, attractions and gardens such as Lyndhurst, the sailing town of Lymington (with ferry terminal to the Isle of Wight), Beaulieu Motor Museum, Exbury Gardens and the riverside village of Bucklers Hard. The county of Hampshire itself was enjoyed by Jane Austen with her house and museum in Chawton and her resting place in Winchester Cathedral. Saughtrees is a detached holiday home with a difference, a hidden gem right in the heart of the New Forest National Park and has its own 18 acres of natural woodland as its garden. The house has a light and airy modern feel, the large living room extends into a orangerie that over looks the woodland which is covered in bluebells in May, both this room and the kitchen/dining room have wood-burning stoves, so it is cosy whatever the weather outside. Hatchett Green is in a conservation area and has pretty cottages all centred around the green where cricket is played. A few minutes by car takes you to Woodgreen, which has a village shop and pub. It is an ideal base to enjoy the great outdoors, as off road walking and cycling can be done from the top of the drive. The New Forest National Park has lots to do with popular villages, and a small town to visit to see the free roaming ponies, donkeys and cattle. Christchurch Harbour is a great area, less than 10 miles away. The coast, with Blue Flag beaches at Bournemouth and Poole, is within easy reach, as is the city of Salisbury with its medieval cathedral. There are many places of interest for families, including Marwell Zoological Park, the New Forest Otter and Owl Wildlife Park or a day out at Beaulieu Motor Museum. Further afield, but worth the trip, are Monkey World and the Tank Museum near Wool, and Southampton with its maritime history and West Quay shopping centre. Shop 3 miles and pub 1½ miles.
