The Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watermeet Gorge (NT), valley of the rocks and the funicular cliff railway are well worth a visit, or looking towards Minehead, you can go back in time on the scenic West Somerset Steam Railway, or visit the enchanting medieval Dunster Castle (NT), with its beautiful terraced gardens, Deer Park and Mill making for an interesting day out. Nearer home you can wine and dine in the owner’s adjacent public house and restaurant, the 13th-century Ship Inn, or enjoy the fine selection of unusual shops in this pretty traditional village. Alta Lyn Barns are set in a glorious position with far reaching views out to the Bristol Channel, set high above the towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. These three properties (HKKP, HKKW & HMMH) are part of a barn conversion set within the Exmoor National Park. The holiday apartments have been fully restored with exposed beams and rafters. Set amongst some of the most glorious scenery to be found in Devon, plenty of footpaths and coastal walks can be taken from the apartments, which are on Exmoor National Park. Walk through the heather; look out for red deer, ponies and buzzards. The properties are ideally situated for exploring the area. To the west are some of the country’s finest beaches at Woolacombe and Putsbourgh. At Ilfracombe there is the harbour area, Landmark Theatre and an good range of shops and amenities. Visit the Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle. Travelling east, take a trip into Dunster, 10 miles, and visit the historic yarn market and castle. Minehead, with its sandy beach, is 18 miles. Take in all the small villages close by, such as Blue Anchor, Watchet and Old Cleave and the many NT properties waiting to be explored. Located on the vast Woolhanger Estate, these three highly individual, detached holiday properties (refs HTTH, HTTJ and HTTK) have been converted from old farm buildings to provide very comfortable, well-appointed accommodation. They offer a quiet haven but with plenty to do on the doorstep. There is great walking on the many footpaths in the area, including up to Challacombe Reservoir, a hidden little gem.
