In fact The Jurassic Coast has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its ancient geology and is of course a great place for wonderful views over the English Channel and cliff-top walks.

Dorset has wonderful walking country which is a great way to appreciate the unspoilt beauty of this region, or you could maybe take to the quiet country roads and off road cycle ways. It's a place to kick back and relax with lots of traditional country pubs and fine restaurants to discover.

The seaside towns of Bournemouth and Weymouth come highly recommended with lovely beaches and plenty of fresh sea air. You can reach the beach at Swanage via the heritage railway; it's one of the best ways to soak up your surrounds and ensure complete relaxation. With stops at Corfe Castle and the small sleepy oasis of Harman's Cross, it's also one of the best ways to get a unique perspective of Dorset's many attractions, and a true feel for its unspoiled beauty.

Also of note is Brownsea Island which offers a number of attractions for visitors, including lush woodland, an indigenous red squirrel population and a 16th century castle. For a great family day out visit Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre at Wareham where you'll find over 250 rescued monkeys and apes providing plenty of entertainment and education.

The Victorian Barn and Dairy House Farm Cottages offer excellent accommodation and superb facilities to enjoy a great holiday. Set in a wonderful location between Sherborne and Blandford Forum, in rolling Dorset countryside in the Blackmore Vale. These properties are within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and nestling under Bulbarrow Hill, the second highest point in Dorset, and on a 65-acre beef farm, which the owner lives on site. The holiday homes all have use of a lovely large indoor heated swimming pool, which also has a gym and sauna, outside guests can enjoy the games room, the grounds with a childrens play area, hot tub and fishing lakes stocked with carp and silverfish. The seven houses and apartments are completely self contained and each can sleep from 2 to 10 guests, and several of the properties can be linked together. The Victorian Barn, originally built in 1849, offers seven properties and in the grounds are two cottages and two lodges, so making a great location for families, or very large groups who want a bit of quality time together. You will have plenty to do onsite which the children will love, or you can explore the lovely county of Dorset. Within 2 miles of the famous Chesil Beach and World Heritage Jurassic Coast and between West Bay and Portland Bill, this Grade II 13th-century stone tithe barn, situated in Litton Cheney on a working farm, has been restored and extended to provide excellent detached character accommodation for eighteen guests, in this sought after part of West Dorset. It offers a great location for enjoying this holiday area, and boasts nine en-suite bedrooms (five doubles and four twins), each with TV, and a large kitchen, ideal for self catering with a large group. The original stone barn, now a very impressive vaulted and beamed living/dining room, comfortably accommodates eighteen. There is plenty of room for all; guests can relax and unwind in the large garden, the children can play in the games room equipped with pool table, there is fishing (by arrangement with the owner) in the 2-acre coarse fishing lake, or simply wander down to the village pub to wine and dine, or enjoy some glorious country walking.
Within a few minutes’ drive is Chesil Beach at Burton Bradstock which stretches for 17 miles from Portland to West Bay and is a unique shingle ridge and natural beauty spot. The pebbles on the beach are said to increase in size from east to west, the largest being at Portland where a centre for wind and kitesurfing can also be found. West Bexington and Abbotsbury are a short drive away with opportunities for swimming and fishing. Abbotsbury is home to the swannery which is a popular family attraction for holidaymakers and where visitors can walk amidst colonies of nesting mute swans in a natural wildlife habitat. Originally established by Benedictine monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury, the swannery was used to provide food for their banquets and has been featured in films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens, which were established in the 1700s by the Countess of Ilchester, are another place of interest to visit. Magnolia and camelia collections are of particular note as well as rhododendrons and hydrangeas; a gift shop, restaurant and plant centre complete the facilities for a good day out. There is much to see and do in Dorset for families, especially at Weymouth, a short drive away, which offers many attractions ranging from the Sea Life Museum, Deep Sea Adventure to the Time Walk, or visit Dorchester with its many attractions and shops. Further afield, family days out include Wool with its Tank Museum and Monkey World, or admire the natural arch of Durdle Door and the almost circular cove of Lulworth on the way to Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck. The Old Telephone Exchange, as the name suggests, used to be the old telephone exchange for the village and is built in Purbeck stone, typical of the region. The stunning village of Corfe Castle is dominated by the ruined castle and stands at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.
A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay and there is also horse riding nearby within 5 miles. Set at Higher Bockhampton (which is Hardy’s ‘Upper Mellstock’), Greenwood Grange is a secret hideaway set in its own 4 acres of peaceful grounds and landscaped gardens. All the cottages have undergone a major refurbishment and offer the very highest quality accommodation and facilities, with each cottage having its own individually styled interior using natural and recycled materials where possible.
As well as offering plenty of space for strolling and relaxing, there are two en-tous-cas tennis courts, lawns for croquet and badminton, a children’s play area with swings and yurt (with toys and games) and a dogs’ exercise paddock, in addition to the organic vegetable garden and pick your own fruit area, with free range chickens providing eggs, to be enjoyed by all the family. At the entrance of Greenwood Grange is Thorncombe Wood - a wildlife sanctuary from which a nature trail leads through magnificent chestnuts, beeches and oaks, and through 70 acres of black heath, furze, birch, holly, heather and rhododendrons. This is just one of many walks directly from the door over some of the most beautiful countryside in Dorset, perfect for healthy walks for dog lovers and all the family.
Those interested in the literary landscape can explore the locations of Hardy’s famous novels. Steeped in history, Greenwood Grange was built by Thomas Hardy’s father, whilst a short distance away is the thatched cottage where Hardy himself was born, built by his great-grandfather and little altered. At Lower Bockhampton, Hardy went to school and there is a lovely walk from there to the next village, Stinsford, where his heart is buried.
All around is a wealth of glorious National Trust countryside, pretty towns and villages as well as the beautiful coastline just 6 miles away. Excellent local village restaurants and pubs can be recommended. Kingston Maurward College with animal park, gardens, conference, function and education centre is within walking distance.
Dorchester (Roman Durnovaria and Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’) is a pleasant walk away (2 miles) and a most attractive country town, with museums of the dinosaur and the military, swimming pool, golf (good golf can also be found at Weymouth and Charminster) and has plenty of good shops, restaurants and pubs. Also of interest is Prince Charles’s development at Poundbury, near Dorchester.
Weymouth is 8 miles with its Georgian seafront beach - ideal for castle building! It is overlooked by an elegant 3-mile level esplanade; there is swimming from the beach, and there are lots of traditional entertainments. Two nearby RSPB reserves are at Lodmoor and Radipole which has nature trails from which grebes, swans and warblers may be seen.
The beach at Ringstead Bay (6 miles) is known for its geology, fossils and the vegetation and wildlife of its undercliff; nearby can be seen the outlines of a village abandoned in the Middle Ages.
The Dorset World Heritage Coastal Path offers magnificent views and surprising sights, such as the natural arch of Durdle Door, and the almost circular cove of Lulworth, about 7 miles away.
Further west dotted along the coastline towards West Bay and the market town of Bridport are the ‘chocolate box’ villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury (famous for its swannery and gardens).
The area offers abundant river stretches for coarse or trout fishing, and sea angling from the coast.
