The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The pretty stone cottages at Northway are set in 5 acres of grounds within half a mile of the dramatic coastal footpath above Peppercombe’s National Trust shingle beach and within 5 miles of the glorious sandy beach at Westward Ho! Most of the cottages open off a delightful flower filled courtyard, whilst some look out towards the sea. All of the cottages are well furnished and equipped and some have their own garden. Visitors enjoy use of a superb leisure complex housing an indoor heated swimming pool and spa with full changing and shower facilities (open 9:00am-7:30pm), a fitness area and games room with table football (coin-operated), pool table, table tennis and toddlers play area. For children, there is a well-equipped adventure play area and an area for ball games, and they will surely enjoy stroking the tame rabbits and goats. Christmas decorations, a real tree and champagne are supplied for Christmas bookings. This is a wonderful walking area, both on the coast and along the nearby Tarka Trail. From the lane, a rough track (not suitable for toddlers or the infirm) leads down to the coastal path from where there are magnificent views across Bideford Bay towards Clovelly and the beaches of Devon’s northern coastline. There is plenty to see and do nearby – The Big Sheep and Milky Way, the new Atlantic Village, and the picture postcard village of Clovelly (6 miles) are just some of the attractions. Bude’s superb sandy beach and resort amenities are within a half hour drive. Golf, fishing and riding are available locally and the Tamar Lakes offer sailing and wind surfing. The Admiral’s House - five well-furnished and equipped apartments (three feature here) - is stunningly located on the edge of Ilfracombe’s Heritage harbour with great harbour and beach views from all living rooms and bedrooms. A steep terraced garden accessed from the 2nd floor of the house is ideal for sunbathing, as a picnic area and for more great views. The Admiral’s House is centrally located for Ilfracombe’s main attractions. There are friendly pubs and restaurants, including Damien Hirst’s The Quay (opposite side of harbour), and shops, cafes within a few minutes’ stroll. There are some fabulous beaches along the North Cornwall coastline, and the Atlantic coast ranges from gorgeous sandy beaches, ideal for young children, to surf beaches for the more adventurous. Stunning coastal vistas of dramatic cliffs and hidden coves and picturesque harbours can also be admired. One such harbour is Port Issac where the TV series ‘Doc Martin’ is filmed. Another favourite is Tintagel, steeped in the mystery of kings and dragons. Bude is a family favourite, and Crackington Haven is popular with holidaymakers and local alike. High up on Bodmin Moor, just south of Launceston, is the famous Jamaica Inn - the smugglers’ inn written about by the author Daphne du Maurier. Nearer home and just down the road from Netherbridge Farm is Homeleigh Garden Centre, a fabulous place to visit which is stocked with beautiful plants. Not just a garden centre, it has much more on offer, including a large restaurant, pet area, gifts and kitchenware, clothing, ponds and garden ornaments, and a large farm shop selling a great selection of local produce. You can stop off before you leave and stock up on some Cornish plants or foods to take back home as a memento of your holiday here in truly glorious Cornwall. Shop and restaurant 1 mile, pub ½ mile.

Already 500 years since the first stone was laid, Weeke Barton is a detached holiday property, close to the owner’s home, set in a peaceful location on Dartmoor. There are two wonderful wood-burning stoves set in inglenook fireplaces, as well as plenty of charm and original features throughout the whole house, including two stone, spiral staircases. All rooms have natural stone en-suite bathrooms, the living room has low sofas and cow skins with a roaring fire, and the bar is snug. There is also plenty of space to wander and relax in the wild but kept gardens. Set in the Teign Valley, this is an amazing spot for a number of outdoor activities. There are walks from the doorstep, bike trails, fishing, canoeing, rock climbing, horse riding and golf. There are various tried and tested walking routes ranging between one and five hours long. There is varied terrain in the area, including rivers, moorland, fields, hills, reservoirs, beach and tors. For cycling enthusiasts, Haldon Hill, 20 minutes away, is a great woodland park for off road cycling, and cycle hire is also available. There is also a freestyle park here, good for all ages and levels. Fly-fishing can be found at nearby reservoirs and private lessons can also be arranged. Trout fishing can be found at Tavistock Trout Farm, which has a pond for children to fish in, and Tavistock itself has a great pannier market. There are many golf courses in the National Park, including the glorious Bovey Castle, Teign Valley and Stover. Horse riding on the moor can be easily arranged to suit all capabilities, this is fantastic area to ride in. Dartmoor is 47,000 hectares of open access land, great for climbing, letter boxing or just to stroll across the wonderful moorland to see the ponies. Dawlish Warren, a 25-minute drive, has sand dunes, swimming, moorings and the usual seaside treats, whilst Exmouth, 40 minutes away, has a long sandy beach with many amenities and is popular with kitesurfers and for rock pooling too. Bigbury, 45 minutes, has a stunning beach stretch with a corridor of sand leading to Burgh Island, with its Art Deco hotel and 13th-cenutury pub. If the tide is in, a sea tractor takes visitors over to the island! Sandymouth, also 45 minutes away, has good surfing and a little café serving real coffee (check the tides). There are also many National Trust properties within a short distance from Weeke Barton. Beach 9 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub ½ mile.
