The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The English Riviera; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, are a magnet for those looking for a seaside holiday with lots of attractions and activities for all ages. It also has a rich maritime history, plenty of sporting events and water sports activities.

This superb large stone house has been built in a most peaceful rural setting, away from all roads, in one-third of an acre of garden and about 7 miles inland from the east Devon coast. The two nearest resorts are Lyme Regis and Charmouth, both with sandy beaches and holiday entertainments. Chard and Axminster lie about 5 miles distant with shops and railway station.
Famous for its fine carpets, Axminster stills produces them today, with the original factory being found near the church. There are good examples of Georgian houses to be seen here, and for those interested in architecture, the National Trust property of Shute Barton close by survives as one of the most important non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages. A mixture of Gothic windows, battlemented turrets and Tudor gatehouse mingle together, reflecting the fact that it parts of it were built during two different centuries. Another interesting property to visit is the Old Bakery, together with the manor mill and forge at Branscome, set in one of Devon’s prettiest cob-and-thatch villages. Operational until 1987, it was the oldest traditional working bakery in Devon, and now serves as a tearoom, with the bakery equipment on display to the public. The lace-making and pottery town of Honiton lies within easy reach and has a selection of interesting shops and an annual fair held in July, whilst a little further afield is Yeovil, well known for its glove-making industry spanning 350 years. Riding and golf in the area.
Lyme Regis is easily reached and the colourwashed cottages and elegant Regency and Victorian villas which line the seafront make this very photogenic town. Attractions for all the family include a museum of local history and geology, Dinosaurland and a marine aquarium. "Colourful gardens amidst acres of farmland – just a mile from South Devon’s golden sands . . ."

Just a mile inland from the beach and sea at Man Sands, these five cottages enjoy a gloriously secluded rural situation on a 47-acre working farm, yet are convenient for the delights of picturesque Kingswear (1½ miles) and historic Dartmouth. Imaginatively formed within a charming group of barns, they are set in superb landscaped shared gardens. An indoor heated swimming pool and a sauna have been created in a separate building, and a further barn offers facilities for table tennis, pool table, ‘fun’ netball and badminton. A spacious play area within a walled garden is equipped with swings, a sand pit, adventure playground, large outdoor trampoline (with safety netting), a large lawned area with raised decking, complete with garden furniture and views over the surrounding countryside; and here there is also an indoor playroom with ball pool, climbing frame and a range of children’s ride-on tractors and cars for outdoor use. The gardens are a riot of colour, with flower beds, tubs, hanging baskets and an intriguing network of brick paths, courtyards and paved terraces. Further afield the estate includes a well-stocked one-acre fishing lake (rods not supplied). Children are welcome to help feed the animals; and there are goats, ponies, kune kune pigs, sheep, lambs, rabbits and guinea pigs to make friends with. The taste of rural life at Nethway continues with walks through the fields.
The cottages themselves have been meticulously converted, with careful use of traditional stone and slate. All are tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, and comprehensively equipped. All of the properties have their own patios with furniture (Hyssop and Lovage Cottages have their own lawned garden), and all enjoy shared use of a separate barbecue area. They are ideal for holidays at any time of the year – all properties are cosily heated throughout and this region is especially beautiful in the quieter off-season months. For Christmas and New Year holidays, each cottage has a festively decorated Christmas tree and the roaring log fires in all living rooms are ideal for the Autumn and Winter months. This peninsula is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is renowned for its coastline, which offers coastal walks and a choice of footpaths leading to secluded beaches. The village of Kingswear itself is set on the Dart estuary opposite Dartmouth – which can be reached via ferry. Here you will find a wealth of things to do, including the Kingswear–Paignton steam railway, Paignton Zoo and Woodlands Leisure Park, to name but a few, and many Blue Flag beaches and hidden coves are within easy reach. Coleton Fishacre (NT) is 1 mile away. Torquay, Brixham and Paignton offer an array of seaside attractions and are within easy driving distance. Dittisham and Totnes make excellent river excursions from Dartmouth, and Dartmoor is only 45 minutes drive. History is woven into the fabric of these quietly set rural manor cottages....

Courtlands Manor Estate dates back to the 13th century and was once one of the principal country houses and estates in South Devon. The owners live in the manor house and have lovingly, completely transformed the barns into extremely comfortable holiday cottages. Approached via a sweeping private drive, this cluster of barns nestle in a hidden and sheltered valley with stunning country views across the rolling Devon countryside. Five cottages (refs HTTA, HTTB, HTTC, HTTS & HTTT) are named after the families who once lived and prospered here and the other two (refs KAAS and KAAT) are ideal for a large group or couple respectively. There is many an interesting tale to be told of the inhabitants of Courtlands Manor over the past 700 years. One relates that the Champernownes arrived from Normandy in the 11th century and were one of the largest landowners in the county, and another that the Elliotts lived here in 1438 and the son was the mayor of Plymouth, prior to Sir Francis Drake. Located just over 1 mile from the historic market town of Kingsbridge, Courtlands is set on its own private land and is the ultimate ‘get away from it all’ holiday retreat. In harmony with its surroundings and no passing traffic, wildlife is abundant with pheasants and rabbits, the only near neighbours are the owls, whose ‘hoots’ are often the only disruption of the peace and quiet of the star-filled, dark skies at night. Yet centrally situated between Dartmouth and Salcombe it is in a fantastic location to fully explore this region of South Devon and in particular the South Hams. The bustling riverside town of Dartmouth, so popular with tourists, is full of lovely independent and unusual shops, bistros and eateries and has Dartmouth Naval College and the landmark Dartmouth Castle sitting majestically at the mouth of the estuary. Sea trips along the coast to Paignton can be taken from here, or a steam train back to Buckfastleigh. The fantastic, sweeping coastline stretches from Strete, high on the cliff top, along to the famous Slapton Sands, with its dramatic coast road with the sea on one side and a freshwater lagoon on the other. It has year round appeal, with its wide pebbly beach so popular in the summer and great for fishing in the winter. Visit the little, historic fishing villages dotted along the coast, the lighthouse at Start Point and beyond to East Portlemouth and of course Salcombe. Shop and pub 2 miles, restaurant 2 miles.
