Situated in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a peaceful valley close to the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking on the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The owners have made a great effort to ensure that the cottages are both comfortable and practical while the location could not be better for a wide range of Devon attractions.
It might be a family holiday or big reunion, a special celebration, a fun business get-together, a group trip, or a relaxing weekend to recharge your batteries; whatever the reason the facilities are designed to be perfect for winter and summer holidays and the secrets of the Ashcombe cottages’ appeal are presentation, comfort and convenience. The cottages are maintained to very high standards. All have leather sofas, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable mattresses - the owners consider a good night’s sleep the most important thing! The cottages either have Italian tiled floors or wooden floors, and some still retain many original features including oak beamed ceilings. The properties cater for almost any party size, sleeping from 4 to 28 people and are all rated either 4 or 5 stars. Ashcombe’s larger cottages provide great value for money for visitors sharing with their friends and families. For meals, an in-house chef can be booked to come and do the hard work. The heated indoor swimming pool is perfect for any rainy days and keep the children happy. Cider Barn sleeping 16 and Nut Tree Farm sleeping 28, which are both 5 star rated, also have outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
For those wishing to enjoy a more adrenaline-charged holiday, the brilliant Ashcombe outdoor activity centre (at extra cost) offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more and is located just under a mile down the lane and is available for those 14 years and over. At the end of the day the Ashcombe Village Club provides cheap beer and a cheerful atmosphere.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only 20 minutes’ drive away while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham with its annual crab catching competition.

Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path which runs along the entire length of the Jurassic Coast and offers the walker stunning views, with a bird’s eye view of many coastal features. From the coast path you can experience the drama of sheer cliff faces, take in the wonderful towns of Beer, the ‘picture postcard’ fishing village, or Budleigh Salterton. This tranquil and historic seaside town nestles on the edge of a pebble beach beneath spectacular red cliffs, made famous by literary giants such as Noel Coward, P.G. Wodehouse and Anthony Trollope. Visit Seaton with its famous trams or Sidmouth which still has a unique charm and has captivated thousands of holidaymakers. Beautiful gardens, leisurely walks, Regency history, clean beaches and friendly shops – it is all here in this lovely seaside town. There is so much to see and do locally when visiting Wayside House. This peaceful group of hills which lies on the border of Devon and Somerset has survived almost unscathed by post-war development. To the north the land rises steeply in a dramatic wooded scarp, while to the south it forms a plateau, deeply dissected by valleys. On top of the plateau lie open windswept spaces, while in the valleys, picturesque chertstone, cob and thatched buildings cluster in villages and hamlets, surrounded by a patchwork of small enclosed fields, and accessed down narrow winding lanes with tall hedgerows. " Between coast and country ... a collection of designer cottages enjoying the best of both worlds "

Situated in a quiet and peaceful rural location on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Tawstock, these four attractive holiday cottages (refs HYA, HYB, HYC and HYD) are only 7 miles from the nearest beach at Instow and conveniently close to all facilities at Barnstaple. The properties have been converted from a range of old stone barns presented in a fresh contemporary style. With the owners living in the original farmhouse, they form part of the traditional farm courtyard, though Park Gate is no longer a working farm. Each holiday cottage is individual in design, well equipped and comfortable, with attractive furnishing fabrics and attention to detail. Each has patio doors from the living room leading to its own decked patio and lawned garden, perfect for al fresco meals while watching the sun set.
This is an excellent location for exploring the magnificent coastline of North Devon, from the ‘Golden Coast’ with fine sandy surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, to the rugged cliffs of Hartland Point. The coastal footpath offers superb walking with wonderful views of the dramatic shoreline, while inland the wild beauty of Exmoor waits to be discovered. Bideford Bay takes in its sweep along Westward Ho!, Hartland Point and the beautiful village of Clovelly – much loved by photographers. Instow and the old ship-building port of Appledore shelter in the mouth of the Torridge Estuary, and regular boat trips to Lundy can be taken from Bideford. Casual cyclists who fancy a spin in the countryside under their own steam will appreciate the Tarka Trail, a popular flat route that is easy to manage and runs from Meeth near Okehampton; it winds its way to Braunton and can be picked up at Barnstaple, just 2 miles from the cottages. There are plenty of places to visit nearby, including a number of family attractions such as The Big Sheep, Funderzone and The Milky Way which have covered amusements for children of all ages. At Great Torrington, there are the famous and stunning RHS gardens at Rosemoor. Whilst there, it certainly worth a visit to the Dartington Crystal factory glass works (7 miles), where molten glass is expertly fashioned into unique works of art by the glass blowers. Horse riding, golf, surfing lessons and fishing can all be organised locally. The nearby town of Barnstaple offers good shops and restaurants, a weekly market and pannier market, theatre, cinema and sports facilities. Shops 2½ miles.

Tucked away on the outer edge of the courtyard is Mulberry, which has fine views over the valley and extending into the distance beyond. Suitable for the larger family group, many homely touches have been added to make it a comfortable ‘home from home’.

Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis are all within 10 miles. Nestling on the south-facing aspect of a tranquil wooded valley, the panoramic views from the lodge are magnificent, giving year round appeal. Converted from a flint barn and farm outbuildings this detached holiday home provides comfortable and spacious accommodation with classic rural character. A large sauna (eight persons) and fitness room has been installed. Outside the paved terrace provides an excellent vantage point to observe the valley’s wildlife. The South West Coast path from Watcombe in Torquay to Maidencombe is a favourite spot for local walkers. This walk has a little bit of everything - from woods and open fields, to beaches and coastal scenery and rare wildlife. Two of the English Riviera’s top attractions can be found in nearby Babbacombe: Bygones Victorian Street and Babbacombe Model Village. Cliff Lodge lies just 22 miles from Exeter city centre. " Between coast and country ... a collection of designer cottages enjoying the best of both worlds "

Situated in a quiet and peaceful rural location on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Tawstock, these four attractive holiday cottages (refs HYA, HYB, HYC and HYD) are only 7 miles from the nearest beach at Instow and conveniently close to all facilities at Barnstaple. The properties have been converted from a range of old stone barns presented in a fresh contemporary style. With the owners living in the original farmhouse, they form part of the traditional farm courtyard, though Park Gate is no longer a working farm. Each holiday cottage is individual in design, well equipped and comfortable, with attractive furnishing fabrics and attention to detail. Each has patio doors from the living room leading to its own decked patio and lawned garden, perfect for al fresco meals while watching the sun set.
This is an excellent location for exploring the magnificent coastline of North Devon, from the ‘Golden Coast’ with fine sandy surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, to the rugged cliffs of Hartland Point. The coastal footpath offers superb walking with wonderful views of the dramatic shoreline, while inland the wild beauty of Exmoor waits to be discovered. Bideford Bay takes in its sweep along Westward Ho!, Hartland Point and the beautiful village of Clovelly – much loved by photographers. Instow and the old ship-building port of Appledore shelter in the mouth of the Torridge Estuary, and regular boat trips to Lundy can be taken from Bideford. Casual cyclists who fancy a spin in the countryside under their own steam will appreciate the Tarka Trail, a popular flat route that is easy to manage and runs from Meeth near Okehampton; it winds its way to Braunton and can be picked up at Barnstaple, just 2 miles from the cottages. There are plenty of places to visit nearby, including a number of family attractions such as The Big Sheep, Funderzone and The Milky Way which have covered amusements for children of all ages. At Great Torrington, there are the famous and stunning RHS gardens at Rosemoor. Whilst there, it certainly worth a visit to the Dartington Crystal factory glass works (7 miles), where molten glass is expertly fashioned into unique works of art by the glass blowers. Horse riding, golf, surfing lessons and fishing can all be organised locally. The nearby town of Barnstaple offers good shops and restaurants, a weekly market and pannier market, theatre, cinema and sports facilities. Shops 2½ miles.

More suited to a larger family group, careful thought and attention to detail has gone into giving Oak a cosy ‘home from home’ atmosphere.
