Find cottages in TotnesVisit Totnes

Totnes has a unique laid back atmosphere, lovely river side setting and a rich historical past.

Set in the rolling red-earthed hills of South Devon, the market town of Totnes offers a fascinating history and is often referred to as one of Devon's gems. The town is full of colour and character with individual, quirky shops, cafes and restaurants that sell local produce and a twice weekly market on Fridays and Saturdays. At the picturesque quay you can take ferry trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth.

Visitors to Totnes have a choice of two castles; Berry Pomeroy Castle is rumoured to be the most haunted castle in England while Totnes Castle is well worth the climb up to the castle keep, where you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of the town across to the River Dart.

For a day out with a difference, the Sharpham Vineyard and Cheese Dairy is highly recommended, and China Blue is perfect for a rainy day, where you can create and paint your own pottery and shop for unique gifts and home wares.

There's plenty going on from your Totnes cottage; you'll find a wide range of things to see and do nearby, but if history and visitor attractions aren't your thing, grab your walking boots and head off into the Dartmoor countryside or enjoy a taste of the fresh sea air; you'll be sure to find a welcoming watering hole along the way to enjoy a spot of lunch and a pint of the local ale.

Start your discovery of this wonderful area and search for Totnes holiday cottages today.

"...wonderful countryside, stunning beaches and friendly locals - the perfect combination for an unforgettable holiday experience...."

Set in the heart of village life, Court Prior Farm is a lively working farm where lambs are in the pastures, cattle graze in the fields and the smell of the hay fills the air. In season guests may be able to bottle feed the lambs or feed the bullocks. Elderflower Barn (HDDI) and Cowslip Barn (HDDJ) have been converted from the old milking parlour and retain lovely original features, such as stone arch windows, and both have heavy beams and wooden floors. Each holiday property has a good sized lawned rear garden with pretty planted flower tubs and farming machinery decorating the driveway completes these two lovely adjoining properties. All three properties including Pear Tree House (HGGD) combine modern elements such as underfloor heating, vaulted open ceilings, wood-burning stoves and a farmhouse-style kitchen with granite worktops. Shared swimming pool, hot tub and sauna.
Court Prior Farm has an indoor heated swimming pool shared by all properties, with its own shower and pool house with sauna. A hot tub is situated on the terrace amongst the pretty landscaping for all properties to share. All properties have their own changing room, toilet and access into the pool, via their own private patio areas. Elderflower Barn has a large patio area to the side with specimen trees planted into large tubs giving an almost Mediterranean feel. All three properties may be booked together for a wonderful family gathering to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary.
These three holiday properties would make a super location for a winter break, as well as a summer holiday enjoying the many glorious beaches of the South Devon coastline all within easy driving distance. Blackpool Sands is a fantastic family beach just 4 miles away, has a small shop and facilities as well as ample parking, and makes a lovely day out by the seaside. Slapton Sands is a lovely drive, with the sea on one side and the freshwater lagoon on the other. This area is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the birds and wildlife on the lagoon are amazing, so remember to bring a pair of binoculars. A little further along, the relic of the World War One tank can be recovered from the beach. Driving along inland a little way leads to the town of Kingsbridge.
Alternatively guests may enjoy visiting Dartmouth or Totnes, both just 4 miles away and both quite different. Totnes is a lively colourful town, full of different types of ethnic shops, and hosts a busy market day on Fridays and Saturdays. Dartmouth, nestling on the edge of the river Dart, has a strong maritime history and many designer shops and local artists. For great food the famous New Angel is located in Dartmouth, and is the ideal place for a special meal out. More local to the property is the village of Cornworthy - a quiet hamlet tucked away in the rolling Devon landscape - where there is a nice pub within walking distance which serves good food and real ales. There are many village pubs dotted all around this area including places to eat on the river at Tuckenhay, Ashprington and Dittisham. Shop (in pub) 2 miles, pub 1 mile.

Two double bedrooms (5ft beds), one with en-suite shower room and toilet. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with shower cubicle and toilet. First floor: Living/dining room with wood-burning stove, wooden floor and well-equipped kitchen. Beamed throughout.

"Devon’s best kept secret... Just inland from some of Devon’s loveliest and most natural beaches lies the village of Tuckenhay set along Bow Creek on the River Dart...."

In a setting of stunning natural beauty, Tuckenhay Mill is the centrepiece of a cluster of country homes and cottages with superb leisure facilities including two indoor and one outdoor pools, making it ideal for a family holiday for all ages.
The Mill which once produced some of the finest paper in the land, nestles in the green and shady Bow Creek, a languid inlet of the River Dart where private yachts have replaced the old tall-masted ships and barges. Around the mill are all the buildings which once went to make up a small bustling village port. These listed buildings have been sympathetically restored and converted to a delightful range of holiday properties to suit larger family parties. Awards have been won for the conversion of buildings and the conservation of the area. With so much to do, many holidaymakers return year after year.

South Devon awaits you
Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb Blue Flag beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.
Tuckenhay is only 5 miles inland from Dartmouth and 3 from the market town of Totnes. Village shop 3½ miles. Riverside inn and restaurant within walking distance.

A superb choice of cottages
Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

Spacious hall with polished wooden floor leading into large sitting-room with open fireplace and French doors leading via a small flight of steps to paved terrace overlooking the valley. Large kitchen/dining-room with superb traditional country-style kitchen with farmhouse table and chairs. Separate toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with en-suite shower room (no toilet).

Featuring one of the waterwheels that powered the Mill, the original workings are now landscaped into the garden. Attractive beamed living room with traditional open stone fireplace providing a true country cottage atmosphere. Open-plan kitchen/dining area with French doors leading to breakfast patio with separate enclosed garden. First floor: Double bedroom with fitted wardrobe. An absolute must-have holiday for those larger families of all ages wanting a real experience of living on a farm. This traditional spacious farmhouse is set right in the heart of a working farm with 190 acres of land with sheep and cattle grazing in the fields surrounding the farmhouse. There is an opportunity, depending on the season, to join in on this farm and feed the lambs, collect the eggs, watch the sheep shearing, pick fruit and vegetables and identify nature all around. The farmhouse is supplied with its own private spring water. Previous visitors have thoroughly enjoyed the farm life and country living – and many an evening picnic has been had sitting on top of the hill overlooking the farmhouse. This is a delightful house for families of all ages, at any time of year. It is spacious and well-equipped with a large living room made cosy by the wood burner and a traditional large kitchen complete with large table for everyone to sit around and talk together. The farm itself is near Totnes, midway between the wild open spaces of Dartmoor and the lovely South Devon coastline scattered with hidden coves and sandy beaches. A day on the beach can be spent at Slapton or Beesands, or visits made to the maritime town of Dartmouth. Totnes is a vibrant, fun town, especially on a Friday when it is market day. A drive up on to Dartmoor reveals rugged windswept moorland with high tors and low valleys, where ponies run free. Salcombe makes for a good day out, watching the yachts sailing in and out of the estuary, whilst further afield are the larger cities of Exeter and Plymouth (which has a spectacular waterfront and is steeped in history).
