Find cottages in DevonVisit Devon

Devon's status as 'The English Riviera' is well earned and is testimony to the popularity of this holiday destination, which attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to enjoy its special charms.

The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The English Riviera; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, are a magnet for those looking for a seaside holiday with lots of attractions and activities for all ages. It also has a rich maritime history, plenty of sporting events and water sports activities.

South Devon is characterised by gentle rolling hills and a lovely coastline, offering easy walks, country pubs and great restaurants, while the northern coast has superb surfing beaches. Exmoor in north Devon is perfect for moorland walks, mountain biking and has wonderful natural beauty.

The many facets of Devon provide visitors with a wide choice of holiday options and lots of top quality visitor attractions and days out, such as the Dartmouth Steam Railway and The National Marine Aquarium; too many to mention here.

Of note is Woolacombe Beach, one of the jewels in Devon's crown with three miles of golden sand of Blue Flag status and the Tarka Trail; its 30 miles forms a figure-of-eight and follows the path the brave otter takes in Henry Williamson's beloved novel.

If you fancy walking on the wild side why not take a trip to one of Devon's many animal attractions? The zoo at Paignton offers an array of exotic creatures and makes for a wonderful day out, while the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm is also very popular with families.

Devon offers a wealth of holiday opportunities so if you're ready for a break take a look at our selection of holiday cottages in Devon.

The Chantry Ref: KAAO

Dating back to 1815, this beautiful, quirky, thatched property, forming the major part of the original vicarage, is the perfect location for a family holiday or for friends to get together. Described by the Georgian Group, dedicated to preserving buildings from this period, as ‘one of the very best examples of the cottage orne genre in the country’. On entering this Grade II* listed property, guests cannot help but be impressed with the large 24ft circular reception hall, containing a 600 year old ruud screen, reputedly conferscated from Kingsteignton chuch 200 years ago, this is the door way into a 10 sided dining room. Leading off the reception hall is an elegant sweeping cantilevered staircase rising to the galleried landing. Natural light is admitted through a rooftop lantern cupola positioned directly over the reception hall and landing. There are many original features within the property, including the Gothic windows, door alcoves and the doors leading to the dining room which are 600 years old. Approached via a sweeping driveway passing a gatehouse, the secluded gardens feature a cobbled terrace beneath the veranda and a wide variety of established trees, shrubs and plants. Directly from the rear of the breakfast room, a 10ft by 20ft plunge pool occupies a completely private position with a timber decked terrace. A shaped lawn adjoins the terrace having a flagged patio under a gazebo, making this area of the garden ideal for entertaining and al fresco dining. Although close to a road, the property offers privacy. The property has been decorated and furnished to a very good standard, and offers spacious themed bedrooms, including chrome, Greek, African, Arabian and flowers. There are many beaches within a short drive, and Dartmoor is approximately 20 minutes away. The Times newspaper voted Dawlish Warren as one of the ‘Top Ten Places by the Sea’, and is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With plenty to see and do, Dawlish Warren ticks all the boxes if you’re looking for a traditional seaside holiday. As part of the Exe Estuary, Dawlish Warren is one of the most important areas for wildlife and wading birds in the country. Thousands of birds come to feed or to spend the winter here, attracting bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The surrounding dunes and grassland are home to over 600 types of flowering plants. Dawlish Warren is internationally recognised as an important ecological site. From here, gain access to the various hides dotted throughout the habitats on-site. Shaldon beach is where visitors will find some of the most spectacular coastline in South Devon. Because of its location and the way the sands have formed, it’s perfect for a number of water sports, including sailing, fishing, swimming, canoeing and rowing, Shaldon is close to attractions such as the Shaldon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor and Haytor and Homeyards Botanical Gardens. Alternatively, visitors can challenge themselves on the Templar Way, an 18-mile walk that follows the export route for granite taken from Dartmoor, passing along the Haytor Granite tramway and the Stover Canal, before finally passing through Newton Abbot towards Teignmouth and Shaldon. There are many NT properties close by, including Agatha Christie’s summer home at Greenway. Paignton Zoo, Model Village, Cockington, Sea life Centre, Brixham, Dartmouth and Dartmoor are all close by. Exeter, with its magnificent cathedral, is a mere 20-minute drive, where visitors can browse the many shops and cafes, or take a boat trip up the river to tucked away pubs. "Deep in Tarka the Otter country where the river glides beneath the trees and time stands still..."

Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.
The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as an all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. There is an on-site cafe with wi-fi (open 9am-9pm). In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.
Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

This three-storey property is a converted former mill enjoying river and countryside views, with the original mill wheel still in place. Open-plan living/dining room with electric woodburner and 42in plasma TV. Well-equipped, modern fitted kitchen. First floor: Double bedroom with TV and en-suite shower room with toilet. "Enjoy the ‘cream’ of Devon at one of the twelve cottages on the Ashcombe Estate..."

Situated in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a peaceful valley close to the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking on the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The owners have made a great effort to ensure that the cottages are both comfortable and practical while the location could not be better for a wide range of Devon attractions.
