For a place steeped in history in the heart of Devon, try the market town of Newton Abbot. Dating back to 1220 AD, the town came into existence when the Abbots of Torre Abbey built a 'new town', where the River Teign turns into an estuary.

The town's wealth grew from the wool and leather trades in the Middle Ages. Later, in 1583, when local adventurer Humphrey Gilbert landed in Newfoundland and claimed it for the British, a trade route was set up between the two places. In the 19th Century, ball clay was found nearby and this material was shipped through Newton Quay to lands beyond. Today, the site of the old quarry is a wonderful country park with ponds, streams, a watersports lake and play areas and trail for children.

In the 21st Century, Newton Abbot remains a thriving market town with several interesting historic buildings to visit, including Old Forde House, which had both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell to stay, but not at the same time, the 13th Century Bradley Manor and Tucker's Maltings, a working malt-house that runs fascinating brewing tours.

It's well placed to explore the rest of Devon. Mysterious Dartmoor with its famous tors and rugged scenery lies to the west and the English Riviera to the south, where plenty of seaside fun can be had on the beautiful beaches of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The spectacular scenery of South Devon with its red cliffs is also within easy reach.

Newton Abbot is also home to its famous racecourse, which is a major venue for thoroughbred horses. It also hosts regular antiques sales.

There are many delightful walks that can be taken from the cottage, not to mention you can walk to the River Teign in under 5 minutes. The river is a great place for picnics, watersports (sailing, water skiing, canoeing etc.), bird watching and nature lovers. At the mouth of the River Teign, approximately 2 miles away, lies the picturesque seaside village of Shaldon and the larger town of Teignmouth. With wonderful views over Dartmoor and situated within South Devon countryside, this stunning complex of barn conversions (Refs HHHX and HHHW) was once part of the Stover Estate. They offer wonderful all year round accommodation, with each cottage boasting its own patio area, with garden furniture and barbecue. Once a working farm and an old miniature railway site, Gorse Blossom Farm has some 40 acres, where guests can wander around at their leisure and which offers a haven for wildlife, including birds of prey, badgers and the lesser horseshoe bat, which has made its home here. The indoor games room just opposite the cottages will keep children and adults entertained as well as an all weather surface tennis court.
Being close to the A38 makes this the perfect place from which to explore South Devon, Torquay (with its sandy beaches, 12 miles), Plymouth, 25 miles (to see the Hoe, the Barbican, the National Marine Aquarium which is ideal for children and adults) and the Eden Project (approximately
1½ hours drive) is a fabulous day out. Crealy Adventure Park is 20 miles. Exeter has a magnificent cathedral and quay, whilst a boat trip can be taken up the river to two stunning pubs. There are many villages to explore and stop off for a Devon cream tea. Dartmoor is on the doorstep, with its stunning scenery and heather clad rocky tors and ponies, and is a walkers’ paradise at any time of year, with Becky Falls (rocks and waterfalls) 8 miles. Teignmouth is a traditional Victorian seaside resort with a nature reserve at Dawlish Warren, a hotspot for bird watching. Exeter has a world famous cathedral, quays and a shopping centre. For the more active there’s surfing at Bigbury, or visit Haldon Forest with its cycle and nature trails and Go Ape! for the children. Torbay is easily reached as well as Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with its bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and watersports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands. Shop and pub ¼ mile.

Dating back to the 13th century these charming holiday cottages occupy a peaceful location, and command views over the owners’ 250-acre working Charolais beef farm, bordered by the River Teign on the edge of the village of Teigngrace. This lovely and popular part of South Devon has much to offer with glorious beaches, meandering estuaries and some very pretty countryside. Also within easy striking distance is the rugged expanse of Dartmoor, its wild beauty changing colour with the varying seasons, its picturesque villages, Dartmoor ponies and Tors. Walnut Cottage (ref 26729) and Oakapple Cottage (ref 26721) are barn conversions offering comfortable holiday accommodation. Acorn Cottage (ref 25544) and Oak Leaves (ref 25560) were originally farm buildings and have since been carefully converted into two spacious and very comfortable holiday cottages. Side by side each has its own patio. The Farmhouse (ref 25545) was the original farmhouse since 1640 and this now has been tastefully converted for use as a holiday cottage. Barnyard Cottage (ref 25546) is the original building, built in the 13th century and was in later years the kitchen for the farmhouse; now it has been tastefully converted to form a very comfortable holiday home. The owners will be delighted to show children around the farm and are always on hand to tell guests of the many attractions this lovely area has to offer. There are also chickens wandering around the farm, look out for the eggs. There is also a designated dog walking area, set in half an acre. Situated close to the owners caravan park, but retaining their privacy, all of the cottages have use of the heated outdoor swimming pool, there are also 2 coarse fishing lakes, (must have own licence or purchase a day ticket). Twelve Oaks is an ideal location for those who want to leave behind the strains of city living and relax in a peaceful rural setting. Wander along pretty streams, explore rambling woods, and trek over undulating hills. There are so many attractions close by including Go Ape or cycling in nearby Haldon Hill, Crealy Adventure Park and Woodlands all within a 25 mile radius. Closer to home, visit Paignton Zoo, Model Village at Babbacombe or the cliff railway. There are some very nice sandy beaches in Paignton, Dawlish, and Goodrington. Take a look at all the NT places such as Castle Drogo or Agatha Christies home Greenway. Take a ferry to Dartmouth and visit the castle or take a boat trip up the river. There is the steam train that is always a fun day out. Bird watching at the nature reserve in Dawlish Warren, or for walkers, walk the Templar Way from Teignmouth to Haytor - 21 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
