The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The English Riviera; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, are a magnet for those looking for a seaside holiday with lots of attractions and activities for all ages. It also has a rich maritime history, plenty of sporting events and water sports activities.

Dray Cottage is set in the small hamlet of Fallapit, just outside the village of East Allington midway between the towns of Kingsbridge, Totnes and Dartmouth. This AONB has many sandy beaches and stunning coastline very close by, including Blue Flag beaches Slapton Sands, Beesands, East Portlemouth, Bantham, Bigbury and Thurlestone. The town of Dartmouth is nestled on the River Dart and offers boat trips, exclusive shops, galleries, many pubs and some famous restaurants. Totnes, 5 miles up the river, is a town steeped in history, enjoying a colourful and exuberant atmosphere, while Salcombe is another pretty riverside town, boasting a busy estuary with many yachts sailing by and a myriad of interesting shops and pubs in its winding streets. There are several NT properties in the area to explore and some delightful open gardens. With the South Hams coastal path stretching over 60 miles there is great walking and time can be spent exploring the rugged moorland.
A little further afield and well worth a visit is the Eden Project in Cornwall. Riding, sailing, sea and coarse fishing are available locally, as well as a good variety of shopping. Shops 3 miles, pubs ½ mile.

There is so much to see and do locally when visiting Wayside House. This peaceful group of hills which lies on the border of Devon and Somerset has survived almost unscathed by post-war development. To the north the land rises steeply in a dramatic wooded scarp, while to the south it forms a plateau, deeply dissected by valleys. On top of the plateau lie open windswept spaces, while in the valleys, picturesque chertstone, cob and thatched buildings cluster in villages and hamlets, surrounded by a patchwork of small enclosed fields, and accessed down narrow winding lanes with tall hedgerows. Peakaboo Ref: HMMB

Peakaboo is a large detached house (originally a pair of cottages) situated on Peak Hill, overlooking Sidmouth, with extensive sea and cliff views. It has a steep parking area and its own 2½-acre private woodland behind the property, with cliff top paths all adjoining National Trust land in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are also stunning views of cliffs and the sea from the octagonal deck. Peakaboo is only a 5-minute drive from Sidmouth and all its amenities; it has been decorated and furnished to a high standard and makes an ideal holiday base for touring this fantastic part of Devon. There are many NT properties to visit including Bicton Park, whilst a trip to Crealy Adventure Park (close to Exeter) will be greatly enjoyed by children. For walkers, the coastal path to Branscombe, Beer and Seaton is fantastic and other places of interest include the Donkey Sanctuary near Seaton (5 miles) as well as Seaton Tramway. There are many activities to enjoy such as windsurfing, sailing, walking, bird-watching, golf and tennis, to name but a few.
The historic city of Exeter is 20 miles with its stunning cathedral and many shops. Slightly further afield lies the rugged wilderness and beauty of Dartmoor National Park, where both experienced and novice walkers can enjoy the stunning scenery. Visit all the quaint villages in the area and stop for a cream tea.
Lyme Regis makes an alternative day out and children of all ages will enjoy hunting for fossils in the high cliffs that overlook the town itself. Topsham, Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton are all worth visiting each with independent shops. Shops and pub ¼ mile.

The coastal path is easily accessed, leading to lovely beaches and coves; the popular Fishcombe Cove is at the top of the road. Brixham forms the third part of Torbay - the others being Torquay and Paignton. The bay is known as the English Riviera due to its unique micro-climate. Walkers and navigators can get escape and and explore the depths of Dartmoor, spot wild Dartmoor ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear bubbly waters of the River Dart and other rivers. You can also feel the somewhat eerie presence of the tors, seven rocky hills presiding majestically over the moors. Take the ferry across to Dartmouth, the neighbouring town to Brixham, set on and across the River Dart.
