Find cottages in KingsbridgeVisit Kingsbridge

More than a tourist destination, the ancient town of Kingsbridge marks the crossroads between Dartmoor, Torbay and Plymouth. This beautiful region is known as South Hams and is rich in both wild countryside and busy, picturesque towns.

ingsbridge is ostensibly a market town, its heritage drawn from the Buckfast Abbey Monks trading their produce of vegetables, honey and cream in the 13th century. The vibrant market is still held regularly and is very much in keeping with Devon's focus on sustainable farming and locally sourced goods.

The town has been awarded the original 'Walkers are Welcome' accreditation in Devon and indeed, from the early Spring through to the mild, late Winters, Kingsbridge provides a variety of walks and cycle paths for all abilities, including the new Family Walking and Wildlife Activity Trail.

Being situated on the Kingsbridge estuary means water based activities are in abundance, including canoeing, carp fishing and sailing from the nearby Salcombe Harbour. The town has a trendy surf vibe thanks to the excellent Bantham surfing beach very close by, and a lesson at the surfing academy is a super, fun day out for families.

The arable land, lush pastures and clean seas produce a world-class array of foods. Restaurants and pubs in the Kingsbridge area specialise in superb fish and fresh vegetarian rich in natural flavours. A traditional South Devon crab sandwich is a must for all visitors and don't forget to treat yourself to a gooey Devon afternoon tea.

This is a charming and amiable town that welcomes visitors throughout the year. The best way to get a sense of the true Devonian lifestyle is to stay locally, so search for cottages in Kingsbridge and discover a unique way to accommodate your holiday.

"Sands flanked by rock, with wooded cliffs above – true Devon coastal character . . ."

The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Comfortably furnished, each has a small first floor sitting-out area with furniture. They are ideally located for a Devon holiday by the sea. Shop/P.O. 50 yards.

History is woven into the fabric of these quietly set rural manor cottages....

Courtlands Manor Estate dates back to the 13th century and was once one of the principal country houses and estates in South Devon. The owners live in the manor house and have lovingly, completely transformed the barns into extremely comfortable holiday cottages. Approached via a sweeping private drive, this cluster of barns nestle in a hidden and sheltered valley with stunning country views across the rolling Devon countryside. Five cottages (refs HTTA, HTTB, HTTC, HTTS & HTTT) are named after the families who once lived and prospered here and the other two (refs KAAS and KAAT) are ideal for a large group or couple respectively. There is many an interesting tale to be told of the inhabitants of Courtlands Manor over the past 700 years. One relates that the Champernownes arrived from Normandy in the 11th century and were one of the largest landowners in the county, and another that the Elliotts lived here in 1438 and the son was the mayor of Plymouth, prior to Sir Francis Drake. Located just over 1 mile from the historic market town of Kingsbridge, Courtlands is set on its own private land and is the ultimate ‘get away from it all’ holiday retreat. In harmony with its surroundings and no passing traffic, wildlife is abundant with pheasants and rabbits, the only near neighbours are the owls, whose ‘hoots’ are often the only disruption of the peace and quiet of the star-filled, dark skies at night. Yet centrally situated between Dartmouth and Salcombe it is in a fantastic location to fully explore this region of South Devon and in particular the South Hams. The bustling riverside town of Dartmouth, so popular with tourists, is full of lovely independent and unusual shops, bistros and eateries and has Dartmouth Naval College and the landmark Dartmouth Castle sitting majestically at the mouth of the estuary. Sea trips along the coast to Paignton can be taken from here, or a steam train back to Buckfastleigh. The fantastic, sweeping coastline stretches from Strete, high on the cliff top, along to the famous Slapton Sands, with its dramatic coast road with the sea on one side and a freshwater lagoon on the other. It has year round appeal, with its wide pebbly beach so popular in the summer and great for fishing in the winter. Visit the little, historic fishing villages dotted along the coast, the lighthouse at Start Point and beyond to East Portlemouth and of course Salcombe. Shop and pub 2 miles, restaurant 2 miles.

Living room with dining area. Kitchen with electric range (for cooking) and breakfast area. First floor: Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with separate shower cubicle and toilet. Separate toilet. Second floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.
