The town has strong connections with the Royal Navy and is famous as the location of Dartmouth Naval College. It's also been the place where in times past plundering pirates would set out to plunder and the Pilgrim Fathers set out for America.

This characterful town has winding narrow streets, quirky shops, art galleries and delicatessens. By the quayside you'll be able to watch the brightly coloured boats come and go. Visitors are able to board the ferries that ply the River Dart or climb aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

From your holiday cottage enjoy the beautiful surrounding coast and countryside including Blackpool Sands, a stretch of well-maintained shingle beach offering safe swimming and ample parking. Further along the coast you'll find Slapton Sands, where a tank stands as a stark reminder of the military history of this place and the ill-fated D-Day training operations during WWII. "Colourful gardens amidst acres of farmland – just a mile from South Devon’s golden sands . . ."

Just a mile inland from the beach and sea at Man Sands, these five cottages enjoy a gloriously secluded rural situation on a 47-acre working farm, yet are convenient for the delights of picturesque Kingswear (1½ miles) and historic Dartmouth. Imaginatively formed within a charming group of barns, they are set in superb landscaped shared gardens. An indoor heated swimming pool and a sauna have been created in a separate building, and a further barn offers facilities for table tennis, pool table, ‘fun’ netball and badminton. A spacious play area within a walled garden is equipped with swings, a sand pit, adventure playground, large outdoor trampoline (with safety netting), a large lawned area with raised decking, complete with garden furniture and views over the surrounding countryside; and here there is also an indoor playroom with ball pool, climbing frame and a range of children’s ride-on tractors and cars for outdoor use. The gardens are a riot of colour, with flower beds, tubs, hanging baskets and an intriguing network of brick paths, courtyards and paved terraces. Further afield the estate includes a well-stocked one-acre fishing lake (rods not supplied). Children are welcome to help feed the animals; and there are goats, ponies, kune kune pigs, sheep, lambs, rabbits and guinea pigs to make friends with. The taste of rural life at Nethway continues with walks through the fields.

The village of Kingswear itself is set on the Dart estuary opposite Dartmouth – which can be reached via ferry. Here you will find a wealth of things to do, including the Kingswear–Paignton steam railway, Paignton Zoo and Woodlands Leisure Park, to name but a few, and many Blue Flag beaches and hidden coves are within easy reach. Coleton Fishacre (NT) is 1 mile away. Torquay, Brixham and Paignton offer an array of seaside attractions and are within easy driving distance. Dittisham and Totnes make excellent river excursions from Dartmouth, and Dartmoor is only 45 minutes drive. Rosehill is a well-loved holiday home which would suit a family or group of friends and makes a great choice whether looking for a summer destination or a cosy winter hideaway. This lovely country cottage is a spacious detached period property, set in an elevated position in the quaint little picturesque seaside village of Slapton which is dotted with pretty thatched cottages, and just a short walk away from the well known and much favoured beach at Slapton Sands. There is no other place like Slapton Sands - a wide stretch of beach and a fresh water lagoon divided by the coastal road that runs from Kingsbridge to Dartmouth, the beach itself is a beautiful pebbly beach that stretches for almost 2 miles along the South Devon coastline. It is a firm favourite with families and tourists and has a well-documented history, being the rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. A Sherman tank now sits alongside the beach as a memorial. The wildlife in the area is abundant with the fresh water lagoon located right next to the beach road. Today, Slapton Sands is a beach where families and friends can enjoy great holidays. South Devon’s Mediterranean-style climate means that the sea is calm and there are plenty of water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and canoeing to try out. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months and there is a flag system in place advising holidaymakers where it’s safe to swim and when to stay out of the water. Many visitors come to observe wildlife in the nature reserve. Throughout the year the plants and animals living in the freshwater lake, Slapton Ley, vary according to the seasons. The whole stretch of this particular piece of coastline has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a great destination at any time of the year. Charming Totnes has a wealth of ancient buildings, good shopping for antiques, crafts and gifts, and an Elizabethan Tuesday market. From Dartmouth the steam railway runs along the coast to the lively seaside resort of Paignton. Local places of interest include Greenaway (home of Agatha Christie), Coleton Fishacre (NT), Bowden House, the Butterfly Farm near Buckfastleigh, and Paignton Zoo.
