Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. Piles Peek Farm Ref: HXW

This Devon longhouse dates back to 1066 and is steeped in history with many original features such as a well, recesses in the walls and feature fireplaces. Renovated, it is set on the edge of Dartmoor in a tiny hamlet and is surrounded by rolling fields where ponies and cattle graze. Many walks can be enjoyed on the moors a mile away and bird-watchers will take delight in the many species of bird to be found here. A large garden and outdoor swimming pool (heated May-Sept) add extra appeal to this historic house. In close proximity to the A38, in countryside ideal for horse riding, Piles Peek is a great holiday base for exploring the attractions of Devon. Ivybridge is just 3 miles away and offers shops, pubs and leisure centre. Golf (at Wrangaton, 4 miles) and cycling can also be enjoyed locally, with several places of interest all within a short drive of Ivybridge itself. Flete (dating from the Elizabethan era) and the NT property Saltram House (a Georgian mansion) are fine examples of past architecture and for those more interested in the wonders of nature, Kitley Caves at Yealampton, and the Dartmoor Wildlife Park provide a good day out.. Wembury Bay (8 miles) is a marine conservation area supporting a diverse array of plants, birds and marine animals, and has wonderful coastal walks and views across the mouth of the Plymouth Sound. Not far from Wembury are the attractive villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo (flanked by NT woodland) and from the mouth of the Yealm estuary, fishing trips and motor boats are available for hire, with a regatta held in August. Plymouth with its longstanding naval connections is within easy reach, and here the Barbican, the National Marine Aquarium and Plymouth Hoe await discovery. Close to many sandy beaches along the South Hams area, lazy days by the sea can be whiled away. The Eden Project with its diversity of plant habitats is approximately one hour’s drive. Shops 3 miles, pub within walking distance, 2 miles.

The Granary Ref: E3526

This 70-acre Dorset Sheep farm is set in the glorious countryside of South Hams, a uniquely lovely region boasting the mildest year-round climate in Britain. The delightful little Georgian town of Modbury, with its specialist and antique shops and splendid inns, is under 5 miles, whilst nearby is Ivybridge, known as the southern gateway to Dartmoor, offers excellent sports facilities, an indoor pool and a renowned garden centre. Dartmoor National Park lies within easy reach – wild ponies, the Dartmoor Wildlife Park, Widecombe in the Moor and Buckfastleigh Abbey are just some of its attractions. National Trust properties at Saltram House – a magnificent mid-18th century mansion – and Coleton Fishacre are a short drive as is Burgh Island, of Agatha Christie fame. Plymouth and the Eden Project are further afield but afford excellent day trips. With wonderful views over Dartmoor and situated within South Devon countryside, this stunning complex of barn conversions (Refs HHHX and HHHW) was once part of the Stover Estate. Converted in early 2008 in a contemporary style and equipped to a high standard, with the addition of modern day comforts, they make the perfect place for couples, families and larger parties wishing to holiday together.
They offer wonderful all year round accommodation, with each cottage boasting its own patio area, with garden furniture and barbecue. Once a working farm and an old miniature railway site, Gorse Blossom Farm has some 40 acres, where guests can wander around at their leisure and which offers a haven for wildlife, including birds of prey, badgers and the lesser horseshoe bat, which has made its home here. The indoor games room just opposite the cottages will keep children and adults entertained as well as an all weather surface tennis court.
Being close to the A38 makes this the perfect place from which to explore South Devon, Torquay (with its sandy beaches, 12 miles), Plymouth, 25 miles (to see the Hoe, the Barbican, the National Marine Aquarium which is ideal for children and adults) and the Eden Project (approximately
1½ hours drive) is a fabulous day out. Crealy Adventure Park is 20 miles. Exeter has a magnificent cathedral and quay, whilst a boat trip can be taken up the river to two stunning pubs. There are many villages to explore and stop off for a Devon cream tea. Dartmoor is on the doorstep, with its stunning scenery and heather clad rocky tors and ponies, and is a walkers’ paradise at any time of year, with Becky Falls (rocks and waterfalls) 8 miles. Paignton not only has more sandy beaches, but also a famous zoo.
Visit the South Hams, taking in Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth. Go the other direction and take in the Jurassic Coast, or visit Beer, Branscombe and Seaton to take a ride on the Seaton Tramway. Higher Hannaford Cottage is set in an idyllic rural location on Dartmoor’s southern slopes. It is nestled high above and is only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful River Dart. The property has been decorated and furnished to a very good standard and offers a perfect base for a family holiday. Located 3½ miles from the ancient stannery town of Ashburton, it is perfectly situated for exploring and enjoying the host of activities that Dartmoor has to offer. There are wonderful walks from the doorstep, riding, canoeing, fly fishing, cycling and bird watching (Hannaford is used by the RSPB for a spring camp) or simply as a quiet retreat. There is something for everyone throughout the year. Though best known for its rich history, folklore and geology, the thriving moorland community guarantees a wealth of farmers’ markets providing quality local food year round. There are plenty of outlets for local crafts, and the summer months bring music and cultural events including Dartington Literature Festival, The International Summer School of Music and Widecombe Fair. There are plenty of opportunities for day trips. The historic market town of Totnes has a famous Friday market and boat trips down the river Dart to the estuary town of Dartmouth, whilst Tavistock has reputedly the best cheese shop in the UK. Both North and South coasts are spectacular and offer great beaches, surfing and magnificent coastal walks; they are easily accessible by car, bike, foot or train. The Eden Project is a little over an hour away to the north west. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

Weeke Barton Ref: KAAP


Already 500 years since the first stone was laid, Weeke Barton is a detached holiday property, close to the owner’s home, set in a peaceful location on Dartmoor. There are two wonderful wood-burning stoves set in inglenook fireplaces, as well as plenty of charm and original features throughout the whole house, including two stone, spiral staircases. All rooms have natural stone en-suite bathrooms, the living room has low sofas and cow skins with a roaring fire, and the bar is snug. There is also plenty of space to wander and relax in the wild but kept gardens. Set in the Teign Valley, this is an amazing spot for a number of outdoor activities. There are walks from the doorstep, bike trails, fishing, canoeing, rock climbing, horse riding and golf. There are various tried and tested walking routes ranging between one and five hours long. There is varied terrain in the area, including rivers, moorland, fields, hills, reservoirs, beach and tors. For cycling enthusiasts, Haldon Hill, 20 minutes away, is a great woodland park for off road cycling, and cycle hire is also available. There is also a freestyle park here, good for all ages and levels. Fly-fishing can be found at nearby reservoirs and private lessons can also be arranged. Trout fishing can be found at Tavistock Trout Farm, which has a pond for children to fish in, and Tavistock itself has a great pannier market. There are many golf courses in the National Park, including the glorious Bovey Castle, Teign Valley and Stover. Horse riding on the moor can be easily arranged to suit all capabilities, this is fantastic area to ride in. Dartmoor is 47,000 hectares of open access land, great for climbing, letter boxing or just to stroll across the wonderful moorland to see the ponies. Dawlish Warren, a 25-minute drive, has sand dunes, swimming, moorings and the usual seaside treats, whilst Exmouth, 40 minutes away, has a long sandy beach with many amenities and is popular with kitesurfers and for rock pooling too. Bigbury, 45 minutes, has a stunning beach stretch with a corridor of sand leading to Burgh Island, with its Art Deco hotel and 13th-cenutury pub. If the tide is in, a sea tractor takes visitors over to the island! Sandymouth, also 45 minutes away, has good surfing and a little café serving real coffee (check the tides). There are also many National Trust properties within a short distance from Weeke Barton. Beach 9 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub ½ mile.
