Devon's status as 'The English Riviera' is well earned and is testimony to the popularity of this holiday destination, which attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to enjoy its special charms.

The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The English Riviera; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, are a magnet for those looking for a seaside holiday with lots of attractions and activities for all ages. It also has a rich maritime history, plenty of sporting events and water sports activities.

South Devon is characterised by gentle rolling hills and a lovely coastline, offering easy walks, country pubs and great restaurants, while the northern coast has superb surfing beaches. Exmoor in north Devon is perfect for moorland walks, mountain biking and has wonderful natural beauty.

The many facets of Devon provide visitors with a wide choice of holiday options and lots of top quality visitor attractions and days out, such as the Dartmouth Steam Railway and The National Marine Aquarium; too many to mention here.

Of note is Woolacombe Beach, one of the jewels in Devon's crown with three miles of golden sand of Blue Flag status and the Tarka Trail; its 30 miles forms a figure-of-eight and follows the path the brave otter takes in Henry Williamson's beloved novel.

If you fancy walking on the wild side why not take a trip to one of Devon's many animal attractions? The zoo at Paignton offers an array of exotic creatures and makes for a wonderful day out, while the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm is also very popular with families.

Devon offers a wealth of holiday opportunities so if you're ready for a break take a look at our selection of holiday cottages in Devon.

This 300-year-old, granite, thatched Devon longhouse lies detached in a timeless hamlet in the Dartmoor National Park, 3 miles from Moretonhampstead, surrounded by ancient woodland and rolling hills. To the front is a large, south-facing lawned garden with table and chairs - a wonderful place for stargazing at night - enclosed by a sturdy stone wall displaying long-unused bee boles. The property has many original features and a wood-burning stove, but has also been updated for today’s lifestyle; it is spacious and is in an ideal location for families and friends to get together for a holiday or a celebration. Moretonhampstead is a friendly, busy, ‘gateway-to-Dartmoor’ village with shops, good food pubs, church and an outdoor swimming pool; heath-topped and surrounded by hills, it has good walks locally and has reservoir/river fishing close by. Its fascinating history goes back over 1000 years to Saxon times. In addition to having many of its own attractions, it is the ideal base to explore some of Britain’s most spectacular and beautiful countryside including moorland and the coast. For the active, Moretonhampstead boasts what many find to be a surprising range of sporting facilities and the great expanse of Dartmoor presents any rambler with unlimited options. No part of the National Park is more than a one hour’s drive away and most of the well-known beauty spots are considerably less. For those with other interests, there is the historic naval city of Plymouth, Devon’s Roman capital; Exeter with its magnificent cathedral; the many famous coastal resorts including Torbay, and the serene countryside of North Devon - all accessible within an hour. Set alongside the River Teign on the western edge of Dartmoor, Dunsford Nature Reserve offers wildlife and scenery so rich and varied that you will want to visit many times, and in every season. Admire the large areas of oak woodland glades, bracken-covered valley slopes, exposed rocky outcrops and the River Teign, which supports an abundance of wildlife from butterfly to bluebells, fallow deer to pied flycatchers. Golf at Bovey Castle is 2 miles, the popular Miniature Pony Centre is 2½ miles, Chagford is 5 miles and Exeter, 13 miles, Whatever the time of year, Moretonhampstead has something to offer! Shop 3½ miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
