The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. The Coach House Ref: RCHR35

This former coaching house dates from the 18th century offering spacious character accommodation in the attractive town of Topsham on the River Exe. The property has been renovated to a very good standard providing an ideal base for a family holiday or group get togethers. Sitting on the very edge of town close to the lovely strand with time wasting views over the busy estuary which is especially good for ornithology avocets in winter with RSPB hides. The bird watching here is stunning, look out for waders and migrating birds. There are three good golf courses within 7 miles, Devon’s capital city of Exeter is just 4 miles and the sandy beach of Exmouth just 7 miles and the resort of Sidmouth is 14 miles. Topsham has a host of lovely small shops, fabulous restaurants and a couple of good pubs. The Coach House has a 2-acre paddock with frontage looking over the estuary, you can also walk all the way around the 2-acres and the views are quite stunning. Topsham has so much to offer, take the ferry over to Exmouth, or visit the many NT places, all within a few miles, or Dartmoor with its ponies and heather clad tors. Topsham also has an outdoor heated swimming pool. The town of Budleigh Salterton is well worth a visit. There is a cycle/walking route starting right from the door which goes along the Exe estuary as far as Exmouth, taking in Lympstone and Exton. There is also a floating restaurant at Exmouth which is well worth a visit. Bikes can be hired from the nearby farm which has a great farmshop, restaurant and deli. During the August bank holiday, Topsham has its own carnival which is not to be missed. The Jurassic Coastal Path is close by taking in Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Seaton, the walk is quite stunning. Shops, restaurants and pubs 500 yards.

"Colourful gardens amidst acres of farmland – just a mile from South Devon’s golden sands . . ."

Just a mile inland from the beach and sea at Man Sands, these five cottages enjoy a gloriously secluded rural situation on a 47-acre working farm, yet are convenient for the delights of picturesque Kingswear (1½ miles) and historic Dartmouth. Imaginatively formed within a charming group of barns, they are set in superb landscaped shared gardens. An indoor heated swimming pool and a sauna have been created in a separate building, and a further barn offers facilities for table tennis, pool table, ‘fun’ netball and badminton. A spacious play area within a walled garden is equipped with swings, a sand pit, adventure playground, large outdoor trampoline (with safety netting), a large lawned area with raised decking, complete with garden furniture and views over the surrounding countryside; and here there is also an indoor playroom with ball pool, climbing frame and a range of children’s ride-on tractors and cars for outdoor use. The gardens are a riot of colour, with flower beds, tubs, hanging baskets and an intriguing network of brick paths, courtyards and paved terraces. Further afield the estate includes a well-stocked one-acre fishing lake (rods not supplied). Children are welcome to help feed the animals; and there are goats, ponies, kune kune pigs, sheep, lambs, rabbits and guinea pigs to make friends with. The taste of rural life at Nethway continues with walks through the fields.
The cottages themselves have been meticulously converted, with careful use of traditional stone and slate. All are tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, and comprehensively equipped. All of the properties have their own patios with furniture (Hyssop and Lovage Cottages have their own lawned garden), and all enjoy shared use of a separate barbecue area. They are ideal for holidays at any time of the year – all properties are cosily heated throughout and this region is especially beautiful in the quieter off-season months. This peninsula is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is renowned for its coastline, which offers coastal walks and a choice of footpaths leading to secluded beaches. The village of Kingswear itself is set on the Dart estuary opposite Dartmouth – which can be reached via ferry. Here you will find a wealth of things to do, including the Kingswear–Paignton steam railway, Paignton Zoo and Woodlands Leisure Park, to name but a few, and many Blue Flag beaches and hidden coves are within easy reach. Coleton Fishacre (NT) is 1 mile away. Torquay, Brixham and Paignton offer an array of seaside attractions and are within easy driving distance. Dittisham and Totnes make excellent river excursions from Dartmouth, and Dartmoor is only 45 minutes drive. Guests are free to use the 7 acres of land, including a 2-acre meadow and play area which is ideal for children to let off steam.
The perfect setting for walking holidays, cycling holidays, romantic or family breaks, this relaxing holiday retreat is just 1 mile from the South West Coastal Path, as well as many sandy beaches and hidden coves. To the south west lies Hartland Abbey and to the north west lies Blegberry, a fortified farm dating from the 1600s. In the distance, the stone tower of St Nectan’s Church rises above the picturesque village of Stoke.
The sea, Berry Cove and the South West Coastal Path are a mile’s walk away along a quiet, single-track road and a small footpath. The unspoilt village of Hartland is a mile away, either by road or by footpaths that take you along the side of a small river through the picturesque vale. The historic village of Clovelly is six miles away.
This is a perfect spot at any time of year, with fishing, golf, horse riding, surfing, sailing and walking all available in this stunning area. RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Docton Mill and Hartland Quay are well worth a visit, along with many pretty fishing villages to explore, including nearby Instow and Appledore. For family fun, the Big Sheep and Milky Way adventure parks are a must. Beach 1½ miles. Shop and pub 1 mile.
