Nearby Kingsbridge is a busy market town distinguished by fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, with a largely Elizabethan colonnaded Shambles. A summer ferry runs from here to the sailing and holiday resort of Salcombe, whose calm waters are strewn with small craft, with the ruined Fort Charles at the entrance to the harbour injecting a touch of romance. Just east of Kingsbridge is the lagoon of the Slapton Ley nature reserve which supports herons, terns, widgeon and great crested grebes.
Further afield is the unique resort of Torquay, where the small marina can seem almost Mediterranean, especially at night when coloured lights festoon the harbour. The large sandy beaches are a major attraction, and there are also several museums, houses and ornamental gardens to explore. Shop 1/2 mile.

The spectacular South West Coastal Path has a chain of magnificent cliffs and stretches along the Heritage Coast to Hartland Point. Located close to the heart of the clifftop town of Lynton, this holiday home retains the ambience and appearance of how it might have been in the Victorian era. From the sumptuously furnished and decorated bedrooms to the picture collection, this adjoining house offers something very different, and is an ideal destination to spend a holiday or to celebrate a special occasion. Despite its very Victorian appearance, the house is very much geared to modern day requirements, with all the bedrooms having en-suite facilities and televisions. There is a good-sized shared terraced garden at the rear to enjoy the surroundings and guests can enjoy the popular walks to Watersmeet and Valley of the Rocks which can start directly from the door. It is also a short walk to the heart of Lynton, which has a good range of shops, restaurants and amenities. Lynton is connected to its close seaside neighbour Lynmouth by the famous clifftop railway. Lynmouth is delightful and again has a good range of shops and places to eat. There are numerous attractions within easy reach of the house including Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park and Watermouth Castle. At Croyde and Woolacombe some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country can be found, as well as many smaller coves and bays. Exmoor has lots to offer including Tarr Steps, the village of Withypool and a walk up Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. A day out into West Somerset is recommended with places such as Porlock Weir, Dunster with its castle (NT) and the seaside town of Minehead, home to the West Somerset Stream Railway. ‘Impressive and spacious’ are the first words that describe this period seaside villa. With breathtaking views over the River Torridge, Instow beach and across the estuary towards Appledore, The Captain’s House is also owned and managed by the Webbery Estate (refs HPPR, HPPS, H81, HDDP, HDDN, HDDQ, HDDO and HMMN, just 15 minutes away) and is located in the pretty coastal village of Instow, just a short walk from the beach. Guests can enjoy lovely views from most of the upstairs bedrooms and there is a small reading area that overlooks the garden. The pretty village of Instow, located between Barnstaple and Bideford has stretches of golden, sandy beaches and dunes, which makes this an ideal place for relaxing family holiday. An ideal spot for most watersports and sea - fishing can be enjoyed here, or alternatively local boat trips are available. For those wishing to sample the local food, plenty of pubs and restaurants can be found in Instow and the speciality is seafood - of course. The famous ‘Tarka Trail’ - just on the doorstep - is perfect for walkers and cyclists and follows the estuary towards Braunton and is a lovely way to experience the delights that this area has to offer. On the opposite side of the estuary is Appledore, a pretty unspoilt village with a wealth of painted fishermen’s cottages, found up narrow winding streets, some of which date back as far as 1335. Famous for its maritime history and arts there is a maritime museum and numerous arts and crafts shops. Just a short drive away, visitors will find a substantial and popular surfing beach and golf courses at famous Westward Ho! There is no other place like Slapton Sands - a wide stretch of beach and a fresh water lagoon divided by the coastal road that runs from Kingsbridge to Dartmouth, the beach itself is a beautiful pebbly beach that stretches for almost 2 miles along the South Devon coastline. It is a firm favourite with families and tourists and has a well-documented history, being the rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. A Sherman tank now sits alongside the beach as a memorial. The wildlife in the area is abundant with the fresh water lagoon located right next to the beach road. Today, Slapton Sands is a beach where families and friends can enjoy great holidays. South Devon’s Mediterranean-style climate means that the sea is calm and there are plenty of water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and canoeing to try out. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months and there is a flag system in place advising holidaymakers where it’s safe to swim and when to stay out of the water. Many visitors come to observe wildlife in the nature reserve. Throughout the year the plants and animals living in the freshwater lake, Slapton Ley, vary according to the seasons. The whole stretch of this particular piece of coastline has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a great destination at any time of the year. Oddicombe Beach can be reached by foot down a very steep, wooded lane, or choose a more gentle ascent on the historic Babbacombe Cliff Railway. One of only a few original working funicular railways, the Babbacombe Cliff Railway has been transporting visitors up and down the 240 foot cliff face since 1926. A short stroll from Oddicombe Beach leads to Babbacombe Beach and the Cary Arms Pub. Nearby is Babbacombe Model Village, where thousands of miniture buildings and people capture the essence of all things British.
On returning from the beach, satisfy a healthy appetite at one of the numerous tea rooms and eateries dotted along the cliff top overlooking the stunning Babbacombe Downs. No visit to the area would be complete without indulging in traditional cream teas. Torquay has a lot to offer, there is the Living Coasts where penguins wander freely, the theatre which has shows all year round, or take a ferry across to Brixham, to sample the fresh fish and seafood.

A pretty, 40-minute walk across fields leads to a little-known, sandy beach (Porledge Beach) which is a wonderful sun trap and well off the tourist map, making it usually very quiet, even on the busiest summer day. The famous surfing beaches of Westward Ho! (4 miles) and Bude are an easy drive. Bikes can be hired to explore the nearby Tarka Trail and there is sailing, water skiing, golf and riding locally. The Coach House Ref: RCHR35

This former coaching house dates from the 18th century offering spacious character accommodation in the attractive town of Topsham on the River Exe. The property has been renovated to a very good standard providing an ideal base for a family holiday or group get togethers. Sitting on the very edge of town close to the lovely strand with time wasting views over the busy estuary which is especially good for ornithology avocets in winter with RSPB hides. The bird watching here is stunning, look out for waders and migrating birds. There are three good golf courses within 7 miles, Devon’s capital city of Exeter is just 4 miles and the sandy beach of Exmouth just 7 miles and the resort of Sidmouth is 14 miles. Topsham has a host of lovely small shops, fabulous restaurants and a couple of good pubs. The Coach House has a 2-acre paddock with frontage looking over the estuary, you can also walk all the way around the 2-acres and the views are quite stunning. Topsham has so much to offer, take the ferry over to Exmouth, or visit the many NT places, all within a few miles, or Dartmoor with its ponies and heather clad tors. Topsham also has an outdoor heated swimming pool. The town of Budleigh Salterton is well worth a visit. There is a cycle/walking route starting right from the door which goes along the Exe estuary as far as Exmouth, taking in Lympstone and Exton. There is also a floating restaurant at Exmouth which is well worth a visit. Bikes can be hired from the nearby farm which has a great farmshop, restaurant and deli. During the August bank holiday, Topsham has its own carnival which is not to be missed. The Jurassic Coastal Path is close by taking in Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Seaton, the walk is quite stunning. Shops, restaurants and pubs 500 yards.
