The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It's also famous as the location for Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

Dawlish is a small seaside town approximately 10 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter with its regional airport and M5 motorway junction. It can be reached by regular bus and rail services from the town centre. The immediate countryside is a haven for walkers as the town is close to the Haldon Hills and Dartmoor National Park. There are 18-hole golf courses at Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth, as well as sailing facilities on the nearby Exe and Teign estuaries. The town offers a range of facilities and is well known for the brook and adjacent lawns which are home to a variety of water fowl including the famous black swans which are the town’s emblem. Once down at the sea front, you can enjoy the extensive picturesque shoreline in both directions. To the left, a leisurely sea wall walk takes you to the famed long sandy bathing beaches of Dawlish Warren, skirting the entrance of the Exe Estuary, and its nature reserve full of rare flowers, unusual birds and hidden ponds. To the right takes you to Coryton Cove, along the famous ’atmospheric’ railway line, past the bright row of beach huts and to the Edwardian gentleman’s sandy bathing bay, complete with a small cafe and interesting rock pools to explore. Teignmouth is close with its shops and pier. Sit in one of the local cafes or pubs right on the beach or take a short ferry ride across to Shaldon, where there are many cafes for a Devon cream tea, and a few independent shops. Just east of Kingsbridge is the lagoon of the Slapton Ley nature reserve which supports herons, terns, widgeon and great crested grebes.
Further afield is the unique resort of Torquay, where the small marina can seem almost Mediterranean, especially at night when coloured lights festoon the harbour. Visitors enjoy use of a superb leisure complex housing an indoor heated swimming pool and spa with full changing and shower facilities (open 9:00am-7:30pm), a fitness area and games room with table football (coin-operated), pool table, table tennis and toddlers play area. For children, there is a well-equipped adventure play area and an area for ball games, and they will surely enjoy stroking the tame rabbits and goats. Christmas decorations, a real tree and champagne are supplied for Christmas bookings. This is a wonderful walking area, both on the coast and along the nearby Tarka Trail. From the lane, a rough track (not suitable for toddlers or the infirm) leads down to the coastal path from where there are magnificent views across Bideford Bay towards Clovelly and the beaches of Devon’s northern coastline. There is plenty to see and do nearby – The Big Sheep and Milky Way, the new Atlantic Village, and the picture postcard village of Clovelly (6 miles) are just some of the attractions. Just half a mile from the nearest beach and a 15-minute stroll to Brixham town, Hurst Stone East Cottage was built around the 15th century and retains many of the original features, including beams, window seats, an open fire and two staircases, with an east wing and west wing. This semi-detached, thatched holiday property is ideal for families to holiday together, whether its a family summer holiday near the coast or a cosy winter break when the town is much quieter. Brixham is an old fishing port and has numerous seafood restaurants. Take a boat trip over to Torquay and visit the theatre, or explore Living Coasts, where penguins wander freely. Brixham forms the third part of Torbay, the other parts being Torquay and Paignton. The bay is known as the English Riviera because of its unique micro-climate, and Brixham shares this mild climate. South Devon’s two cities are Exeter and Plymouth, both are within easy driving distance, approximately 30 miles, and offer their own tourist attractions, historical buildings and shops. Dartmoor is breathtakingly beautiful, at once romantic, mysterious, wild and eerie. Visit the tourist spots, or experienced walkers and navigators can explore the depths of Dartmoor. See wild Dartmoor ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear, bubbling waters of the river Dart and other rivers, and feel the somewhat eerie presence of the Tors, seven rocky hills which preside majestically over the moors. Steeped in history, Ben Venue is an imposing listed Victorian house built in 1890, once owned by the brother of A.R Johnson wax polish empire of America. The English Heritage coastline lies within walking distance (1 mile), as does the local beach. Picturesque Clovelly, with its cobbled street leading down to a tiny harbour, is just a short drive away. Historic Bideford, a prosperous port during the heyday of trade with America by sea, lies 18 miles distant, its most famous landmark being the bridge (made up of 24 arches) spanning the River Torridge since the Middle Ages. Traditional West Country crafts are displayed in Old Ford House, and pleasant boat trips can be enjoyed on the river. There are good pubs and highly recommended restaurants not too far from the property. There is an RSPB nature reserve at nearby Labrador Bay (½ mile). Shaldon, with its own zoo and sandy beach, is 2 miles from the property. Torquay has much to offer, including Kent’s Cavern and the Model Village. The Living Coasts have penguins wandering freely, or take a boat trip across to Brixham for a lovely day out. Further along the coast is Paignton with its world famous zoo, sandy beaches, water park and steam train to the historic naval town of Dartmouth. There are many NT properties to visit in the area, such as Agatha Christie’s Greenway home. Exeter with its cathedral is magnificent and well worth a visit, take in the shops or wander down to the canal and take a boat up to the pubs that cannot be reached by car, or for the more energetic, hire a bike and cycle the route instead. For children there is Crealy Adventure Park which is a great day out. For walkers who want to walk the Jurassic Coast, this is a great base as Sidmouth is just 28 miles away.
