Situated in the pretty conservation village of Winster, The Old Angel is a former 17th-century coaching inn. Adjoining another cottage, it offers a wealth of exposed oak beams, floorboards and flagstone floors. Clifton Cottages, comprising spacious Clifton Cottage, a large Georgian house and formerly the owners’ home, together with the smaller former groom’s cottage, Clifton Edge, has been converted with much care to provide comfortable holiday accommodation. Clifton Cottage (ref RH3), suitable for larger groups, boasts a large entrance hall, three reception rooms, and retains much original character with its beams, Aga and homely open fires. Clifton Edge (ref QBP) boasts a hot tub in its own enclosed garden providing the perfect way to relax at the end of the day. The hot tub is only available for use of guests at Clifton Edge (ref QBP) or when both Clifton Edge (ref QBP) and Clifton Cottage (ref RH3) are booked together. Adjacent, yet detached from one another, they are set in a village location with the market town of Ashbourne only 1½ miles away on the edge of the Peak District National Park. This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings, all emphasise the historical importance of this Grade II-listed structure. Lea Hall is a Grade II* listed 17th and 18th-century manor house sleeping 20 guests in 10 en-suite bedrooms. The holiday property has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is set in the heart of rural Derbyshire. Located within the village of Lea, it has been sympathetically and stylishly refurbished by the owner, and extras such as fine toiletries and bathrobes are also provided. The drawing room with crystal chandelier, open fire, flatscreen TV and soft furnishings is the perfect setting in which to relax. The dining-room is set in the older part of the hall, which dates back to the 1600s, and has a wood-burning stove and seating for 20.
The parish of Dethick, Lea and Holloway is steeped in history and Lea is recorded in the Domesday Book as Lede; the notorious Babington Plot of 1586 was planned at Dethick and Florence Nightingale spent much of her early life at Lea Hurst (and almost certainly lived at Lea Hall while that house was being built). The peaceful village of Lea offers visitors friendly pubs, tea rooms, restaurants and the famous John Smedley factory. Rural Derbyshire is a real treasure trove offering everything for the visitor including country houses, historic halls, medieval ruins, heritage railways, cycleways, beautiful unspoilt countryside and pretty villages. One of the closest attractions to Lea Hall is the Heights of Abraham. Built on the site of historic lead mining, the hilltop park is approached by cable car which rises up and offers some spectacular views of the Derwent Valley and surrounding Peak District. Visitors can tour the network of caverns and passageways left behind and explore the 60 acres of woodland hillside and buy souvenirs at the gift shop. Alternatively, for those who appreciate stately homes and gardens, magnificent Chatsworth House (3½ miles from Bakewell) is highly recommended, as well as Haddon Hall and Lyme Park, all of which have been film or TV locations over the years. High in the hamlet of Riber in the shadow of the castle just outside Matlock and surrounded by tranquil rolling countryside, The Stables is situated in the grounds of the privately-owned Riber Hall. This destination is offered for adults and children over twelve years old, inclusive of a tennis court and beautiful garden with heated furnished terrace. There are ten en-suite bedrooms of 17 to 40 square metres, equipped with Sony LCD TVs, dining areas and micro kitchens with combination microwave oven, fridge, kettle/toaster and Wedgwood china. For days out there is plenty to do and see. In the neighbouring village of Holloway is the former home of Florence Nightingale whilst down in the Derwent Valley at Cromford, the World Heritage Site boasts the world’s first water-powered cotton-spinning factories, built by Sir Richard Arkwright and Jedediah Strutt. Just under four miles is the delightful town of Matlock Bath boasting smart riverside cafés and bars slotted in between more traditional pubs, restaurants, tea shops, ice-cream parlours and plenty of restaurants. Here visitors can also sample a ride to The Heights of Abraham by cable car and admire the views of ‘Little Switzerland’ as Byron once described this area. For the more inquisitive visit the Mining Museum for a fascinating look into the area’s past. Shop 2 miles, pub 11/2 miles.
