Set in the Darwin Forest on the edge of the Peak District National Park, this group of holiday cottages enjoys an ideal location from which to enjoy the area’s great natural beauty. Built in traditional Derbyshire stone to blend effortlessly into their surroundings, they are set around the lake and surrounded by mixed woodland, an ideal habitat for a rich variety of wildlife. The cottages are modern and spacious, with comfortably furnished living rooms, several enjoying views over the lake. A central courtyard area creates a focal point, and each cottage has its own patio, as well as shared use of the nine acres of beautiful wooded grounds which include an enclosed, elevated woodland walk around the lake. An old stone building has been dismantled and then erected in the grounds and is used for conferences and also as a fitness/weight loss venue (these facilities can be booked in advance with the management).
This peaceful spot is the perfect stopping off point for walking and cycling amid superb countryside, and a trekking centre just around the corner provides plenty of opportunity to explore on horseback. For the more adventurous, a whole host of outdoor pursuits is available nearby, including sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing on Carsington Reservoir, 13 miles away, while Derbyshire’s gritstone edges and deep caverns attract rock climbing and pot-holing enthusiasts.
The popular Derbyshire Dales town of Matlock is only 4 miles away, with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and shops. Among the attractions here are the Peak Rail steam trains, the Heights of Abraham pleasure grounds, reached by a cable car across the gorge, dramatic show caverns and Gulliver’s Kingdom. There is also a fascinating Lead Mining Museum and an excellent Tramway Museum at Crich, providing something of interest for everyone. Park Hall Manor Ref: RVV2

Perfectly situated just off the main road between Glossop and Chapel-en-le-Frith, the pretty hamlet of Little Hayfield provides an ideal base for walking or touring all the Peak District has to offer. In the village, Tony Warren created the television series Coronation Street and the village is now home to the annual Hayfield sheepdog trials and country show which takes place in September each year. Situated just 1 mile from the charming village of Hayfield in the narrow valley of the River Sett, it is surrounded by some of the wildest hills in the Dark Peak, a popular base for exploring the Sett Valley Trail and walking on Kinder Scout. For many years Kinder was barred to walkers, being preserved as a grouse moor until interrupted in 1932 by the famous Kinder Scout Mass Trespass! There are excellent walks literally from the door and a good variety of traditional pubs within walking distance. Close by and just a short drive away are the caverns around Castleton, the plague village of Eyam, the popular walking village of Edale and the attractive village of Hope.
For guests who enjoy visiting stately homes and gardens, there are several notable places to visit in the area. Just 3½ miles from Bakewell, the spectacular Chatsworth House is set in extensive parkland with a backdrop of wooded, rocky hills leading to heather moorland. The house itself contains a collection of paintings, furniture, old master drawings, neoclassical sculpture, books and other artefacts. It was built in the 17th century by the first duke of Devonshire and has been in the family ever since. Both the house and grounds (redesigned by Capability Brown) are open to the public and they make for a memorable day out. The small estate village of Edensor is also worth a visit; it was remodelled by the sixth duke for his employees.
Impressive Haddon Hall is another stately home to visit. Originally dating from the 12th century, it is a fortified medieval manor house which has featured in many films and TV programmes, including the BBC’s 2006 production of Jane Eyre and the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. It has a fine collection of English, Flemish and French tapestries. A visit to the stately homes in the area would not be complete without seeing Lyme Hall in Disley - a fine, Italianate house which featured as the home of Mr D’Arcy in the BBC’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
The towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Glossop and Holmfirth (setting for Last of the Summer Wine) are all an easy drive, as is Manchester with its excellent shopping. Shops 1½ miles, pub ¼ mile.

This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings, all emphasise the historical importance of this Grade II-listed structure. Clifton Cottages, comprising spacious Clifton Cottage, a large Georgian house and formerly the owners’ home, together with the smaller former groom’s cottage, Clifton Edge, has been converted with much care to provide comfortable holiday accommodation. Clifton Cottage (ref RH3), suitable for larger groups, boasts a large entrance hall, three reception rooms, and retains much original character with its beams, Aga and homely open fires. The Manor House Ref: ROO3

Nestled in the Peak District National Park, this 16th-century manor house shares 14 acres of grounds with the owners’ other holiday homes and is furnished in a shabby chic style with antiques, wood panelling, beams, stained glass and mullion windows (low ceilings, low doors and uneven floors in some rooms). There is use of a range of facilities (1 hour per day private use), including a shared indoor pool, sauna, solarium and treatment room. Bakewell, 3½ miles, offers shops, bars, a bistro, restaurants, twice weekly market, antique country fairs and music festivals. Stroll alongside the River Wye or a circular 3½-mile walk on part of the Monsal Trail. Chatsworth House, 5 miles, is set in 1000 acres and visitors have the opportunity to see the wild deer grazing. Other places to visit include Carsington Water and Buxton Opera House, both a short drive. Golf and horse riding are within 5 miles. Shops 3½ miles, pub 1 mile.

These two traditional barns enjoy a rural setting with excellent views across the beautiful countryside. Nature lovers will appreciate the beauty and perfection of these idyllic surroundings. The farm is a haven for wildlife with a huge variety of birds including kestrels and coal tits. Within easy driving distance are Chatsworth House, which boasts a famous collection of art treasures as well as beautiful gardens, and Haddon Hall, England’s most complete and authentic medieval house dating back to the 14th century. Carsington Water offers nature trails, a wildlife sanctuary, riding, water sports, cycle hire and a restaurant. Dovedale and Alton Towers, within easy reach. A well stocked fish pond is just 2 minutes away across a field. Both barns have been furnished in a similar layout and traditional style to provide convenience and comfort for guests. Booked together the barns can accommodate 28 people, perfect for any family get together.
