The Hall and Coach House both have a civil license for weddings and it is a location simply made for New Year and Christmas gatherings. Just 8 miles away lies the attractive market town of Appleby, once the county town of Westmorland, and renowned for its famous Horse Fair held in June of each year since 1750. Passing through the town, the Settle to Carlisle railway offers visitors the chance to relax and enjoy wonderful scenery as it runs over the famous 24-arched Ribblehead Viaduct before descending two hundred feet in five miles. Slightly further to the north of Appleby, the traditional, bustling market town of Penrith, gateway to Ullswater, can be found. Whether your interests be walking, climbing, fishing, golf, nature, history, art, literature or just relaxing and touring the pretty sandstone villages of Eden and the spectacular and contrasting scenery of the Lakes and Dales, you will find plenty to do and see. Beautiful walks stretch in every direction from the door towards Grizedale, and near Sawrey where Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm is located, the very cottage where she was inspired to create Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck. At Hawkshead, 4 miles, there is a gallery dedicated to her original drawings. The ferry at Sawrey takes cars across Lake Windermere to Bowness where there are a multitude of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, water-sports of every description and cruisers for trips on the Lake. Graythwaite Hall itself has lovely gardens open from springtime to autumn and there are many other fascinating country houses, gardens and castles within a 10 mile drive, such as Holker Hall, Sizergh Castle and grounds, Levens Hall and gardens, Townend Hall and Holehire Gardens. Just north of Ambleside lies Grasmere with a beautiful smaller lake, also the cottage and museum of the famous poet who loved the Lake District so much and brought it to the attention of the world, William Wordsworth.
