Portreath is a traditional Cornish fishing town that has retained much of its original charm. The once-busy trading port now shelters local fishing boats. Located on the rugged north Cornwall coast, Portreath is famous for its large sandy beach, and there is a stream running down to the sea, which makes it particularly popular with children. The beach is also great for surfing and body boarding, and at low tide there are rock pools to explore and a large natural swimming pool in the rocks.

Portreath's main tourist attraction is The Cornish Goldmines, built on the site of an old tin mine. There are various activities, from panning for gold to exploring the old mine. Near to Portreath is the Tehidy Country Park, a haven for nature lovers with 250 acres of woodland, lakes, nature trails and cycle paths to explore.

Cornwall is renowned for its fresh seafood and Portreath will not disappoint with its selection of cafes and restaurants. Try the beachside Atlantic cafe bar for fish and chips or the Basset Arms, a traditional stone inn famous for its home-cooked seafood stew. The ominous-sounding Hell's Mouth Cafe offers homemade cakes on a stunning cliff top location not far from the village.
