In the heart of Daphne du Maurier country, both the adjoining VisitEngland Gold Award-winning Prideaux Farmhouse (ref TMO) and Prideaux Cottage (ref TMP), together with the beautifully converted, detached single-storey Wagon House (ref TPE) are located on the Prideaux Estate which sits at the top of the Luxulyan Valley with far reaching and rambling views across the valley and woodlands. The valley is a treat for all the family whatever the time of year and is only a short walk from these three properties. Home to what has been regarded as ‘the most beautiful walk in Cornwall’ the area takes you through deeply wooded paths, picturesque streams and under an ancient viaduct that once carried Cornwall’s china clay, tin and granite barges through to the north. The nearby fishing port of Padstow is easily accessible and is almost as popular as Newquay, but has a much more sedate feel to it. The harbour is packed with boats offering cruises in Padstow Bay, whilst a regular ferry sails to Rock and the excellent beaches at Polzeath. Seafood is abundant in every restaurant, the most famous of which is owned by TV chef Rick Stein. Perranporth 5 miles. Eden Project 20 miles. Riding 1 mile. Shops 500 yards.

This very spacious, detached property, converted from a 200-year-old barn, with grain silos 8 yards (toddlers beware!) occupies a peaceful setting on the owners’ 850-acre working arable farm and pheasant shooting estate. Very attractively furnished and well equipped, it boasts eight en-suite bedrooms (all with colour TVs), two sitting-rooms, a games room with open fire and pool table, and its own garden with children’s play area – making it the ideal choice for three or four families wishing to holiday together. Clay pigeon shooting is available by arrangement, with fishing on site (permit required). The farm is centrally located in the beautiful Camel Valley – a haven for nature lovers and fishermen, cyclists and riding enthusiasts, close to the wild expanse of Bodmin Moor.
An ideal base from which to tour, The Shooting Lodge is convenient for the North and South Heritage Coasts of Cornwall, where to the north, the picturesque fishing villages of Port Isaac and Boscastle, and the old port of Padstow are within easy reach. To the south is the harbour town of Fowey, and the charming villages of Looe and Polperro, each with narrow, winding streets full of fisherman’s cottages and intriguing tales concerning their smuggling past. Partly isolated from the rest of the country, until the railway crossed the River Tamar in the 1860s, this region has retained a wealth of antiquities. For historic days out, St Breock Downs Monolith and the Nine Maidens, Pencarrow House and Restormel Castle, and Lanhydrock (NT), with its 450-acre grounds, are nearby. Whilst a little further afield, scholars of myths and legends will find enigmatic Tintagel Castle – said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, a mystical delight. Ancient Wadebridge (4 miles) offers a sports centre, swimming-pool and tennis. Shop 1½ miles, pub 3 miles.
