Just 10 miles away to the east lies the wonderful North Yorkshire coastline. Filey has a wide sandy beach which shelves gently into the sea, whilst the resort of Scarborough, popular with families, offers an excellent choice of restaurants and a theatre. Magnificent Flamborough Head with its bird sanctuary is 18 miles. The historic sea port of Whitby (25 miles), where the legendary Captain Cook learned his trade, has a beautiful new marina. The old town is a jumble of narrow streets, with ancient houses and little craft shops, and above the town, high on a headland, are the jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey, still an impressive sight.
Inland is the market town of Malton, where a museum houses finds from the Roman camp which once stood here. Five miles to the west, Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest houses, is well worth a visit. Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid Minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages. Village shop 1 mile, supermarket 3 miles.

500 yards from beach

A short walk is Preston Sands, a great family beach, where you can sunbathe, swim or grab a fishing net and explore the rock pools at low tide. Along the back of the beach there’s a promenade lined with colourful beach huts, where you can hire one for the day. On the corner of a quiet cul-de-sac and main road, you will find a parade of shops, cafes and restaurants all on your doorstep. Paignton has a wide range of great activities for children of all ages, and the central green is home to a multiplex cinema, crazy golf and the pier with rides and amusements. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway departs from the centre of town, while Paignton Zoo is a mile or so from the centre. Living Coasts, Torquay’s award-winning coastal zoo, is home to a magnificent array of marine life from around the world and is set in a state of the art naturalistic environment. The true story of Agatha Christie’s life is every bit as intriguing and fascinating as her books, and nowhere can you get closer to her legacy than on the English Riviera. Christie was born in Torquay, and spent many of the most important chapters of her life here, as well as using real places in the area as settings for her murder mysteries. Dartmoor is on the doorstep, with its stunning scenery and heather clad rocky tors and ponies, and is a walkers’ paradise at any time of year. Horse riding, climbing, letterboxing, geo-caching or kayaking are also available. Close by visit Babbacombe Model Village and Babbacombe Cliff Railway. Take a boat trip to Brixham from Torquay harbour or discover Agatha Christie’s summer house at Galmpton. Further afield is Plymouth, 25 miles, with its Hoe, Barbican and National Marine Aquarium, whilst the Eden Project (approximately 1½ hours’ drive) is a fabulous day out. Exeter has a magnificent cathedral and quay, whilst a boat trip can be taken up the river to two stunning pubs. Take a walk along the South West Coastal Path which runs along the entire length of the Jurassic Coast and offers walkers stunning views.
