Dalby Forest hosts lots of other attractions such as Go Ape and special events for children, like the fungal forays and bug hunts as well as outdoor concerts in the summer, you can spend a few days in the forest with different activities each day and still not have covered the whole area. Just 3 miles inland you will find the town of Pickering, famous for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Here you can catch the steam train and ride through the fantastic North York Moors to Goathland (Heartbeat Country) and Whitby. Every year Pickering hosts the War weekend where the whole town becomes a huge set from the Second World War. Relive the amazing spirit and camaraderie of WW2. In less than an hour you have the medieval city of York with the fantastic Minster and city walls. York is also accessible by bus from the cottage. The east coast is 15 miles away, where you have the traditional seaside resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, all with fantastic beaches for children. Don’t forget the RSPB cliffs at Bempton, where you will see the puffins in their natural habitat. Internally the cottages have all the modern convenience one might expect and the cottages are surrounded by the well-maintained grounds of the main house. The comfortable beds, well-fitted kitchens and inviting living space make these cottages a must for anyone wanting something a little bit special for their holiday. Besides plenty of walking from the front door, the cottages are ideally positioned to go out and explore the varied and stunning landscape on offer as well as many attractions. There is superb scenery and walking on the South West Coastal Path or inland on Exmoor to places like Tarr Steps and the village of Withypool. Visit the Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watersmeet Gorge (NT), Valley of the Rocks and the venicular cliff railway. Looking towards Minehead, there is the promenade to enjoy as well as a good array of shops and other amenities. The West Somerset Railway is worth a visit for those with an interest in stream engines. Dunster Castle (NT) and village, with its beautiful terraced gardens, deer park and mill will make for an interesting day out as well as Porlock Weir where a pub lunch can be enjoyed overlooking the sea. Higher Farm is well located in the quiet, picturesque village of Martin within a conservation area and on the edge of Martin Down National Nature Reserve. These two single-storey barn conversions, adjoining one another, were formerly the saddle room and stables for the small farm and have been transformed into very comfortable holiday accommodation with a modern, light and airy feel. The village of Martin is set in an area known as Cranborne Chase and the West Wiltshire Downs, an AONB. The village has its own small, community-run shop which opens twice a day on week days (9am-11am and 5pm-6pm) and once in the morning on Saturdays (9am-12pm). The medieval city of Salisbury, 8 miles, has its famous cathedral spire and close, individual shops, pubs and restaurants, a theatre and a cinema which is housed in the old wool market. The New Forest and the small market town of Fordingbridge are 6 miles away. Fordingbridge is known for its famous medieval stone bridge with its fine arches; it boasts plenty of shops, pubs and cafés and there are excellent walks along the river. Shop 6 miles, pub 3 miles.
