With its fishing lake stocked with carp, tench and bream (fishing is free of charge for 2 rods (barbless hooks), 3 hours per day) and acres of farmland to which visitors enjoy access, Venn Farm provides a wonderfully relaxing holiday retreat, yet is only two miles from good roads that make it easy to explore further afield. Superb sandy beaches at Mothecombe and Bigbury-on-Sea, and a variety of water sports at the picturesque twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo are all within about half an hour’s drive. The delightful little Georgian town of Modbury, with its specialist and antique shops and splendid inns, is under 5 miles, whilst nearby is Ivybridge, known as the southern gateway to Dartmoor, offers excellent sports facilities, an indoor pool and a renowned garden centre. Dartmoor National Park lies within easy reach – wild ponies, the Dartmoor Wildlife Park, Widecombe in the Moor and Buckfastleigh Abbey are just some of its attractions. National Trust properties at Saltram House – a magnificent mid-18th century mansion – and Coleton Fishacre are a short drive as is Burgh Island, of Agatha Christie fame. Plymouth and the Eden Project are further afield but afford excellent day trips. Situated in Uppertown, just above the village of Bonsall, high above the wooded ’Via Gellia’ gorge, it is ideal for walkers with the Limestone Way passing immediately alongside the farm. Matlock is 10 minutes away with supermarket, bus and rail, and a steam train up the Derwent Valley. The lively town of Matlock Bath, approximately 2½ miles by car or walk through woodland, has a mining museum, Abraham Cable Cars and Gullivers Kingdom. All the scenic delights of the Peak District are a short drive including Carsington Water, High Peak Trail, Dovedale and the Manifold Valley. The market towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within a half hour drive along with Chatsworth House, Haddon Halla and the Crich Tramway Village all a similar drive. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere. The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies half a mile’s walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North York Moors steam railway is a must. A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.
