These cottages, one a Victorian double fronted detached house and the other the converted stables sit in the very heart of Windermere are tucked away behind the main thoroughfare and accessed by a narrow lane opening out into a small courtyard. Nowadays, the horse and carriages have been exchanged for holidaymakers and the ancient buildings have been successfully converted to provide two most interesting cottages with all the desired 21st century facilities that we are so used to but wonderfully married with an Arts and Crafts style theme throughout, perfectly in keeping with the buildings’ historic past.
Each cottage has been carefully restored, retaining characterful, exposed beams, panelling, flooring and fireplaces whilst handpicked pieces of furniture from the turn of the 20th Century onwards have been sourced to complete the look and transport you back to a bygone era. Well fitted shower rooms, kitchens and good beds, essential for a good nights rest are provided for your self catering stay and even at first glance, Yew Tree and Stable Cottage present as two good quality holiday cottages of a certain style. One can’t help but feel immediately at ease as you enter these unique properties, almost as one felt as a child when visiting Grandma’s house – charmed, cosy and comfortable.

This attractive detached house set in the owner’s grounds provide spacious holiday accommodation situated at the end of a mile-long lane in glorious rural surroundings. There is a public footpath leading off the owner’s drive providing miles of walks across open countryside. A trip to picturesque Rye enables visitors to sample local foods at the Wednesday morning farmers market which is held at Strand Quay. By taking a stroll along the cobbled streets, there is also the chance to buy a memento from one of the many independently-owned shops and boutiques, art galleries and potteries - or even start Christmas shopping from the wide selection of goods available! Also worth a visit are Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Camber Sands and Camber Castle – this area of saltmarsh protects some very special wildlife, and footpaths lead to four birdwatching hides. The picturesque market town of Battle makes for an enjoyable day out, as well as Hastings, the Sealife Centre and Pevensey Castle (where the Romans invaded). The area is also well known for its local vineyards including Chapel Down and Sedlescombe. A trip to Tenterden - often referred to as the Jewel of the Weald - is an alternative and, for garden lovers, Sissinghurst (NT) is not to be missed. Further National Trust places to visit include Smallhythe Place, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle. Day trips to France are possible with the Channel Tunnel a mere 30-minute drive. Ambleside is a superb base for the first time visitor to Lakeland. However, returning tourists to the village will notice a few changes of late and one worthy of a mention is the fantastic new climbing wall, open 12 hours a day, every day for climbers of all ages and abilities, there’s even a taster for ’little monkeys’ from the age of 5. Of course the scenery is one thing that improves year on year, walks on or around the surrounding fells the highlight of any trip to Ambleside, and easily accessible from the property.
