Set in a quiet area just off the cobbled main street in Alston, this terraced holiday cottage was formerly the home of a farm labourer. Originally built in 1611 the property has now been sympathetically restored whilst retaining much of its character and charm. The beam above the fireplace dates back over a thousand years, and was previously part of an ancient ship! The property boasts an upstairs balcony with a sun room, perfect for relaxing and watching the sun set. On the border of Cumbria and Northumbria, Alston is the highest market town in England, and is ideal for touring the northern lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Northumbria. Within easy driving distance are Hadrians Wall, Hexham, Newcastle, the Metro Centre, Beamish Museum, Ullswater or Keswick. Alston lies within an AONB with the Pennine Way running close to the cottage, and spectacular scenery all around. There is a range of traditional pubs and shops, local crafts and the narrow gauge railway in the town. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

Ground floor: Living room with patio doors, beams and wooden floor. Dining room with beams/kitchen. Utility room. Shower room and toilet. First floor: 3 bedrooms: 2 double (one 5ft), 1 twin. All with wooden floors. Bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and toilet. Second floor: 1 double bedroom with additional single (2ft 6in for child) and wooden floor.

Gas central heating, gas and electricity (£15per week November-March). Bed linen and towels included. Travel cot. Video and small library. DVD and small library. Stereo/CD. Gas hob. Electric oven. Microwave. Washing machine. Tumble dryer. Dishwasher. Freezer. Enclosed garden with patio and furniture. Portable barbecue. No smoking. Friday to Friday. Couples and family bookings only.

  14. Alston was a lovely and lively market town, with plenty of places to eat out. It is an excellent base to explore the lakes and the cottage was lovely. It was in the centre of the town. There was off street parking, lots of room, lovely kitchen, modern home with every convenience. May 2009.
