Property Description

Standing in a stunning, elevated position in the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this refurbished, former 19th century farmhouse has enviable views across Alston Moor and the beautiful, unspoilt South Tyne Valley. Perched on the Cumbria/Northumberland border, the traditional features and generously proportioned rooms make this an ideal choice for families and friends looking for a comfortable and well equipped holiday home. Standing detached alongside one other property, its peaceful, rural location makes it feel off the beaten track and yet it is just 500 yards from the Alston to Brampton road which connects the Lake District to the Northumberland National Park. There is a network of public footpaths direct from the doorstep linking up to numerous trails and cycle routes. The archaeological remains of Whitley Castle (Roman Fort), described as the hidden gem of the North Pennines is a stones throw from the property and trout and salmon fishing can be enjoyed on a quiet stretch of the South Tyne River running through the owner’s farm (2 permits available by request in advance). Whitlow is perfectly situated as a touring base for exploring a wealth of natural and historical treasures in the area. Hadrian’s Wall is only 10 miles away, with the Scottish Border and the Lake District approximately 25 miles. Nearby Alston, 21/2 miles, the highest market town in England, offers an interesting array of cafes, shops, pubs, narrow gauge steam engine railway (which runs through the farm) and 18-hole golf. Shops, pubs and restaurants 21/2 miles.

Ground floor: Living room. Dining room/kitchen. Utility room. 2 shower rooms with toilet. First floor: 5 bedrooms: 3 double, two with additional single, 1 twin, 1 single. Bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and toilet.

Woodburner in kitchen included. Oil central heating, gas, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Travel cot. High chair. Digital TV. DVD. Range with gas hob and electric oven. Microwave. Washing machine. Tumble dryer. Dishwasher. Fridge/freezer. Garden with patio and furniture. Ample parking. Natural water supply from spring. Two pets welcome (to be kept on lead at all times, sheep country). No smoking. Friday to Friday.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. One of the best self catering properties we have ever stayed in, beautiful location, warm & comfortable. What more could a family require? June 2012.
  2. Excellent property, one of he best we’ve stayed in. Adults (8) and (2) children both enjoyed the walks and the views from the farmhouse. The biscuits and tea/coffee were much appreciated on arrival. Owners very helpful and accommodating. Will definitely be returning. May 2012.
  3. Superb property with spectacular views across the hills. Most of our walks started from the property meaning we could leave the car at home. Even the dog was challenged with the many stiles and fences we had to cross and was shattered when we returned back to the property. Very impressed with the area and will certainly return. Try the Cafe at the Alston House Hotel (opp newly opened Spar) for lunch - good portions and value for money. March 2012.
  4. A hidden gem! The pictures on the website don’t give justice to this property!! Very helpful owners (son lives in a similar property just across the farmhouse). Plenty of things to do - just at the doorstep. March 2012.
  5. An absolutely gorgeous cottage, we reaaly enjoyed the scones that were left for us by the owners. Dec 2011.
  6. Great spot to explore Hadrian’s wall, also the High Force waterfall, Lambley viaduct and Talkin Tarn. Lovely house, we were very cosy there. Oct 2011.
  7. The house was really excellent, 10 of us stayed there (5 adults and 5 children) and it couldn’t have been better - large enough living spaces, especially the kitchen /dining room, big bedrooms, a lovely sun trap patio with plenty of seating for us all and garden, though the kids mostly played in the fields or down at the river (with supervision as it was a large one). Surrounding area also excellent - walks and runs from the door, and lots of things for the kids and adults within short drives. Particularly liked watching the lapwings and lambs from the house. Nice owners who were helpful but unobtrusive. Would go back again. April 2011.
  8. This was a first class development of an old farmhouse property, retaining the character of the old, admirably complemented by every modern convenience. The cosiest house we have ever stayed in. Nov 2010.
  9. Absolutely beautiful location. Exceptionally high standard decor and furnishings. Extremely helpful owner. Had personal tour of Roman fort on the owners property. Oct 2010.
