Property Description

Ideal for Western Lakes

Tucked away in a peaceful lane at the edge of the village, these sympathetically converted cottages provide welcoming holiday accommodation of a very high standard. Barn Owl Cottage (ref W41964), adjoining the owners’ home, is part of a converted barn and features a fully glazed barn entrance facing south to catch the sun, while the 200 year old detached Old Forge (ref W40295) and first floor apartment Willow Barn (ref W43032) both retain character features. The properties are situated in the picturesque village of Beckermet, close to Whitehaven with its historic harbour, marina and shops, which has twice been named as a Brita resort, and St Bees with its expanse of sandy beaches. This is an ideal situation from which to explore the wonderful Western Fells of the Lake District National Park and the Cumbrian coastline. Ennerdale Water and Wastwater near to Scafell Pike are within easy driving distance. For a superb day out Muncaster Castle also has beautiful gardens and an internationally renowned Owl Sanctuary, not to mention the amazing views from its elevated position. Shop and pubs 0.25 miles, beach 1.5 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. First floor: 1 double bedroom with beams. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). NSH included. Video and small library. DVD and small library. Washer/dryer. Gravelled patio and furniture. Parking (1 car).

All properties: Electricity, bed linen and towels included. Electric cooker. Microwave. No smoking.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Lovely and quiet property just right for two plus small dog location good for St Bees and western lakes. The only down side was a very hard bed. Aug 2012.
  2. Beautiful Location. Friendly proprietors. Accommodation very cosy especially when the huge drape curtains are closed at night. Lovely local walks around the country lanes surrounding Bekermet and a particularly fabulous walk along the old train line which has been turned into cycle track 72 which is just passed St Bridget’s church. June 2012.
  3. Barn Owl Cottage was cosy and warm after returning from various places after a days out in the car. Some evenings we ate in, baring in mind we stayed in March. Nice to Have Sky TV on a evening. March 2012.
  4. Barn Owl Cottage is a comfortable, clean, and pleasant place to stay while visiting the coastal area of north Cumbria. It’s located in a nice village with two good pubs and is less than 15 minutes from shops. There are a number of good walks in the area, including a short walk to the beach. The owners are friendly and helpful. The only downside was that both cell phone and internet coverage is poor, which is not uncommon with barn conversions due to their thick stone walls. So if you really want to get awway from it all and feel cozy and secure, this is definitely the place to be. Nov 2011.
  5. Quiet peaceful location close to the coastline and easy access to the mountains of West Cumbria (the quiet side of Cumbria) Wast Water and Ennerdale lake are very near by car and you can embark on a number of mountain paths from Wast Water. A perfect location. Aug 2011.
  6. Be ready for the bijou quality of this cottage - it is very small, even for two, so don’t expect to invite a load of friends in! The village is a really nice and the position of the cottage on the outskirts we liked, with cows across from the sitting room window (though unfortunately this - the only window downstairs - looks out on the car park for three properties, so the field with the cows is not always visible.) The bedroom IS a good size with a welcome amount of cupboard/hanging space. This is a surprisingly good location for walking the hills around Wasdale (as well as Ennerdale more obviously) and nearby St Bees is very pleasant with good coastal walks. June 2011.
  7. Very comfy, exactly what we wanted for the weekend. Also nice and warm as it wasn’t outside, I could have very easily stayed there a few days more. Jan 2011.
  8. Nice and quiet. Sept 2010.
  9. The property was clean and well maintained. Sept 2010.
  10. Small and compact downstairs, but everything needed, upstairs spacious, bathroom good. Aug 2010.
  11. Nice quiet area. Clean and tidy cottage. Owners very friendly. June 2010.
  12. Quiet rural location with good access to western lakes and coast. Choice of good pubs within short easy walking distance serving good quality food. Property is compact and well appointed, comfortable, homely and dog friendly. May 2010.
  13. Homely and clean in a nice spot accessible to village. The cottage had everything we needed. Very pleasant indeed. Feb 2010.
  14. Cosy, quiet, clean. Dec 2009.
  15. We loved this holiday because it gave us the best of both worlds. I like beach holidays and my partner likes countryside holidays. This holiday gave us access to the Lake District and the coast, with a beautiful beach at St Bees. June 2009.
  16. The accommodation was very good. May 2009.
  17. The location for places to visit. The ’lived-in’ appearance of the cottage made you feel at home straight away. The provision of sun loungers for use in the south facing courtyard garden enabled us to enjoy the summer sunshine all through the day. June 2009.
  18. The whole property was very relaxing and enjoyable I will book again. April 2009.
  19. The property and location was perfect. March 2009.
  20. The property was well presented and a lovely location and we enjoyed our tremendously. Feb 2009.
