Property Description

West Lynch, thatched and cosy, has been with the same family for three centuries and lies on the sunny side of the Porlock Valley. Inside, relaxation and comfort abound - it is beautifully furnished with lots of arts and crafts, many sitting areas, 50in and 32in TVs and with facilities such as Wii, games room and indoor pool table. Outside catering is available by an inspired professional chef by arrangement for that special occasion or treat. National Trust woodlands from the former Acland Estates are just beyond the house. These lead to the open moors - with large herds of red deer, Exmoor ponies, the buzzards on the wing and foxes in thir lairs - and dramatic headland of Hurlstone, looking west down to Devon and north to the Welsh coast. Also within walking distance are the romantic villages of Bossington, Selworthy, Allerford and bustling Porlock for year-round needs, as well as Minehead’s farmers’ market. There is surfing at Lynmouth or beyond to Croyde and Woolacombe, and golf at Minehead or the fine course at Saunton for a true test. Horse riding is available for all abilities and entertainment for both children and adults at Lynch Farm and Tropicaria further on. There are also glorious walks, of course, to hidden treasures such as Culbone Church, Butlins at Minehead or Dunster Castle if activities such as outdoor meals, table tennis, croquet and messing about with balls at West Lynch does not suffice. Local beaches are a short drive away, but Bossington beach is within walking distance, with its amazing pebble ridge. Enjoy a stay in this special corner of Exmoor. Shops approximately 1 mile away in Porlock. Nearest shop ½ mile.

  3. We wanted to have a family meet up for a few days. We had 9 adults and 5 kiddies aged one up to three. The house was perfect for everyone. Sort of "shabby chic" so you could let the kids run wild and not feel tense. The outside had a small front garden just for chatting and letting the kids play and across the unmade and underused road was a walled garden perfect for a kids tea party and games. Down the lane was an Owl sanctuary and other pets. The whole was peaceful and perfect for all. Would go back again. May 2012.

  5. West Lynch Cottage is far larger than it appears from the outside, and is a truly charming house, with a lot of space for large groups to use. The large private garden across the road is magnificent and would be perfect for a barbecue or picnic in warmer and drier weather than prevailed during our visit. The location is absolutely spectacular with views across to Porlock and beyond to Countisbury Head. Our children enjoyed the walk to Bossington to play in the ford, and the walk to the beach which is unspoilt and very quiet, with clear views across the Bristol Channel to Wales and some stunning rock pools at Hurlstone Point revealed at low tide. If you are used to having the central heating on a lot, beware, the oil fired heating will put a dent in your pocket. Our tip would be to congregate around the Aga in the kitchen instead. Bring a torch and, if you have small children, some night lights - finding the toilet in the pitch black Exmoor night can be a challenge otherwise! Oct 2011.

  14. My family from Chicago fell in love with this cottage and felt the area was England "at its finest". We loved this cottage for its size, character, games room, cleanliness and overall feel. We made very good use of the BBQ and walled garden across the road. The walk to Hurlestone Point was well worth it for the stunning views and the surrounding National Trust villages are perfectly kept with beautiful gardens, a lot of them providing afternoon cream teas.   20. A pleasant (though partly uphill) walk into Porlock where there are children friendly pubs and restaurants. Walk from beside the cottage along the cliffs to the pebbly beach, well worth the effort but watch young children on some parts of the walk. March 2007.
