Property Description

This beautiful country estate offers the perfect ‘home-away-from-home’ in England’s most rural county. Each pretty cottage and private garden is out of sight of any other property. Close to Northumberland’s Heritage coast, these secluded cottages have been renovated throughout to provide cosy interiors with wood-burning stoves - perfect for warm winter breaks.
Farm Cottage boasts its own gin-gang, a circular outbuilding once used as a mule-driven mill. The charming Stable Cottage, draped by a copper beech, was once the coachman’s home. Over the bridge lies Garden Cottage set inside the old walled garden. These three cottages are located in a tranquil pocket of beautiful rolling countryside, under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the moorland of the Cheviots. An ideal country retreat, just 3 miles from sparkling white sandy beaches and close to Northumberland’s magnificent castles. Charlton Hall’s ancient parkland makes for perfect scenic walks. Guests can stroll along the Shippton Burn, which runs under stone bridges, filling the trout lake before meandering to the sea. They can also explore woodland bursting with bluebells and wild flowers in spring and summer; and see nesting buzzards, roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and weasels – all abundant here due to careful environmental management. A cross country course takes guests who wish to bring their horses through woods and fields. The nearby beaches are also excellent for riding and dog walking.
Additionally, West Lodge is a single-storey cottage nestling behind beautiful stone pillars at the entrance to the estate, screened by mature woodland and handily placed for touring just 100 yards from the single-carriageway A1. Local attractions include Holy Island, the Farne Islands, historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Heritage coastline and castles. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are just 1 hour by train.
Guests arriving by air met at Newcastle Airport (40 minutes by road) by arrangement. Shops 6 miles.

Step down to warm and spacious living room with wood-burning stove and sofa-bed (for +2). Beamed farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with views over paddock and garden. Spacious double bedroom with 6ft bed and additional single bed (for +1). Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. It is on the edge of the estate & so near the A1 but it meant it was very easy to get to anywhere. May 2012.
  2. The landlord was very friendly and always available. The property was very clean and we could find anything that we needed during our stay. April 2012.
  3. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at West Lodge. This very comfortable cottage is literally yards from the A1, yet provided all the rural peace and quiet we were looking for. Ideally located for touring the Northumberland coast, and for bird watching from the kitchen window. Heartily recommended. April 2012.
  4. We found it welcoming and comfortable. It’s a good central location for numerous good dog-friendly beaches, woodland walks and the garden is a haven for birds and wildlife. April 2012.
  5. Very comfortable base for exploring this beautiful area. So much to do. Property very spacious and comfortable. Sept 2011.
  6. Cosy, quaint cottage, lovely surroundings, very well located to visit local attractions. June 2011.

  10. Nice big enclosed garden for daughter and dog to play in. Very close to A1 so good for commuting to Alnwick and other areas. It’s in a very nice setting with opportunities to see deer down the lane that runs alongside (if you’re as lucky as us). Lovely log burner for heating water made for cosy evenings. Aug 2010.
  11. Clean and well kitted out. Large living room and bedroom. Free supply of firewood. Assess to large estate for walking. Very good information on estate and on surrounding area. Feb 2010.
  12. Beautifully decorated and furnished in keeping with the character of the property. Oct 2009.
  13. A really pleasant and cosy cottage in a lovely location with lots of birds and wildlife just outside the windows. Oct 2009.

  17. The bedroom is beautiful - the website photo doesn’t do it justice. Only problem is the bed is so comfortable that it is difficult to get out of! Great location and close proximity to the A1 wasn’t a problem. April 2009.
  18. A very convenient location for touring Northumbria. June 2008.
  19. Considering it’s location (adjacent to A1), our party had fantastic holiday. The cottage was clean and tidy and the owner was lovely. In fact we enjoyed ourselves so much we are planning to visit again staying in one of the larger cottages with our parents! April 2008.
  20. We were enchanted with the cottage and wildlife in the garden-excellent- quiet but not isolated with easy access to the coast. March 2008.
