Property Description

Sympathetically converted to form characterful properties, the heavily beamed cottages at Thornden Farm date back to the 16th century and occupy a truly peaceful and secluded setting amidst 1066 countryside. Standing within the grounds of Thornden Farm, with its small flock of sheep, friendly goats, free range chickens and grand peacocks, the cottages enjoys far-reaching views to Beachy Head, the South Downs and the sea. Each cottage boasts an individual seating area in landscaped gardens.
There is a wealth of diverse attractions and activities within the surrounding area. Visit historic Battle, where one may pause for a cream tea and visit the ancient abbey or the fascinating world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of everyday items from days gone by. Hastings is a short drive away offering freshly caught fish from the beaches in the old town, the smugglers cave and many more tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled streets, variety of shops and inns such as the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in history as the meeting place for the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with many other beaches and cliff top walks to be discovered along the entire coast. The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.
Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes celebrations in East Sussex are a local tradition, with each area boasting its own Bonfire Society. Within 1½ miles there are two pubs, the ‘Ash Tree Inn’ at Brownbread Street and ‘The Swan Inn’ at Dallington each serve real ales and fine food. Whether it’s a romantic short break or a family holiday that is required, Thornden Cottages offer the perfect setting, as many people testify by returning again, and again, and again. Shop 4 miles.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. The cottage inside was very cosy and nicely decorated and well located to go visiting. We went to Drusillas Farm and Eastbourne as well as Battle itself and all were great. The farm has a fairly small discreet sign so drive very slow or you will miss it. If you are new to renting cottages, as we are, dont forget things like salt and pepper as well as all your other food shopping. The fire was a god send as it was cold and raining but perhaps some wood for it, even at a charge, would have been nice rather than have to go out and find some. April 2012.
  2. Lovely cottage with the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. A little cold, but the owner was quick to repond and warm it up for us. Dec 2011.
  3. Lovely property and owner could not do enough to help - supplying wood for the burner when the evenings turned cold. The location is central for visiting most places. The farms local produce is also a must. July 2011.
  4. Despite it being very cold outside, the property was always warm. Very well insulated. It is an attractive little cottage which I would use again. It is full of character. Oct 2010.
  5. Very characterful, nice amount of living space, and beautiful courtyard at the back. Lovely to have the option of lighting a fire too (some wood supplied and we got more during our stay as the weather was somewhat inclement!). Great for children - lots of Lego, board games, soft toys and books, which went down a storm. Particularly loved the visiting bat - very tiny and shy, only saw him twice but made our children’s holiday! Aug 2010.
  6. Lots of character, good location. May 2010.
  7. Lovely setting, even though there was other accommodation very close by, it didn’t diminish our privacy. Sept 2009.
  8. Website very easy to use, cottage and surroundings beautiful, peaceful and private, owners very helpful when contacted. May 2009.
  9. Beautiful location and well appointed accommodation. March 2008.
  10. A lovely location - very peaceful with easy access to the sea and countryside. The accommodation was characterful and just what was needed for an easy, restful weekend away. Jan 2008.
  11. The Old Barn is a lovely conversion, beautifully done and a pleasure to stay in. A thoroughly relaxing weekend, exactly what we were looking for. Nov 2008.
  12. In a tranquil location we literally managed to get away from it all. Our 3 year old is already asking ‘will we go to the cottage again? April 2007.
