Property Description

Enjoy a unique holiday in this detached windmill, built around 1800, now converted to provide comfortable spacious accommodation over 5 floors with spectacular views over the Chiltern Hills from the second floor sitting room. Used as a working windmill until 1900 and then the home of an actress and a music publisher, The Windmill, now minus its sails, is located in the historic market town of Wendover. Set in a quiet location, it has an attractive enclosed rear garden.
Nestling in a gap in the Chiltern Hills the historic, picturesque market town of Wendover has a fine array of historic buildings, restaurants, shops and pubs; it also has a traditional market every Thursday. The area is blessed with a variety of walks through some of southern England’s most enjoyable countryside; the famous Ridgeway Path runs right down Wendover High Street. At nearby Coombe Hill, the highest point in the Chilterns, visitors can enjoy excellent views over the Vale of Ayesbury and the Chequers Estate, the Prime Minister’s country home. The Windmill is 18 miles from historic Oxford with its dreaming spires and famous colleges, whilst Wendover station is a 5-minute walk from The Windmill giving easy access to guests wanting a day in the capital city of London. Also conveniently located to visit Whipsnade Zoo and the Roald Dahl Museum. Shop 300 yards, pub 200 yards.

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We had a wonderful week at the windmill. It was comfortable and warm and we had every thing we needed to make our stay memorable. We had lots of visitors and they were all suitably impressed. We hope to come back again. Dec 2012.
  2. The property is excellent and very special. All utilities are there and the steps are not as steep as expected. It was very homely with a very nice lawn-garden (enclosed and therefore excellent for kids). April 2012.
  3. The Windmill made for a wonderful long weekend! Lots of stairs though so those less ably bodied may want to take that into account. April 2012.
  4. The windmill is an amazing place for a large family gathering. Very well equipped with extras like a huge box of toys and Lego, books for kids and adults, games,a keyboard, computer, internet,Sky on both TVs, a BBQ pit and cricket bats! The place has cleaning stuff and loo rolls provided and when we had a problem it was sorted straight away. close to good pubs and restaurants and a decent sized supermarket. The beds on the 3rd level are really singles which pull out, so not much space for 2 people, but still comfortable. Bathrooms excellent and lots of hot water. A good place for a get together! May 2012.
  5. The windmill is nicely furnished and finished to a high standard, well equipped and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay. As you would expect accommodation is over several floors so if stairs are a problem I wouldn’t recommend. This was a lovely stay and we’re all keen to re-book. April 2012.
  6. We really enjoyed this property. We went for a weekend celebration, including home cooking. The kitchen was superbly equipped and the dining area comfortable and inviting. This really is an excellent venue for a group of friends to meet up. The owner very helpful and informative. Have to say all our friends commented on the comfort of the beds. March 2012.
  7. We had a wonderful 3 days at the Windmill. The owner was very helpful beforehand and had left a handy hints sheet for us. Beautifully presented property, very comfy with all necessary bits and pieces included. Thank you! Feb 2012.
  8. This was a superb place to have our annual Christmas get together. The windmill was a beautiful setting and the local area had a great walk to burn off our Christmas dinner. The owner was very helpful and kept the windmill in very good condition. Dec 2011.
  9. The Windmill was amazing: warm welcome, well appointed, plenty of space for 10 people - everyone was surprised by how cosy this big historic building was. We stayed for a long weekend and it was the most perfect place for a party - easy to get to by road or rail, and in a lovely town which is well served by pubs and restaurants if you want to get out in the evening. The surrounding countryside is stunning too. Dec 2011.
  10. An outstanding experience. The perfect facility for a large party. Large communal areas but also plenty of private space at a cost much less than a hotel. Excellent location for those who want to use public transport for London and to drive else where. Amersham Station 15 minutes away with large car park and a large Tesco’s on the way back. Good food available in the village. The Windmill was one of the highlights of our trip. I cannot recommend it too highly. Nov 2011.
  11. This was one of the best equipped and cleanest properties we have ever rented (our group has been renting holiday houses twice a year since 2001). We loved its quirky features and were amazed at the spaciousness inside. We had a very comfortable week. Lots of interesting things to do in the location, and some very good walks. Oct 2011.
  12. Everything you would wish to have for an enjoyable stay. Roomy kitchen, all necessities , such as dishwasher etc. Bedrooms very comfy, and clean. Ample washrooms on each floor, showers etc. Area fine for walkers, and the ’Shoulder of Mutton’ Public House serves quality meals, with quality service. A place for a family holiday we would come again. Oct 2011.
  13. An excellent property with great walks from the door, enjoyed by all ages, and the dogs had a great time too. July 2011.
  14. Well equipped for large groups of people. Owner very helpful and accommodation. June 2011.
  15. A wonderful house to stay in. It lacked for nothing! April 2011.
  16. The windmill was amazing, the owner is very friendly and talked us through everything when we got there. I was in the master bedroom at the very top and certainly did my fair share of exercise every day going up and down! Wonderful views, weather was excellent. Would definitely recommend this to a friend. April 2011.
  17. Superbly refurbished Windmill, all new fixtures, spotlessly clean. We had a brilliant time here. March 2011.
