Property Description

Tucked away in a rural setting within the North York Moors National Park, this former barn and house are set across the garden from each other, enjoy glorious views and each makes a lovely holiday home with enjoyable walks from the door. The Wheelhouse (ref IQL) has been carefully restored to combine a wealth of traditional features, such as exposed stonework and an unusually spacious garden room that was formerly the wheelhouse for horses threshing corn. Harfa Bank (ref IRY) is a true family home and enjoys original beams and a traditional fireplace. Ideal for families or friends holidaying together, the properties are just a couple of miles from the pretty village of Swainby and well placed for visiting the market town of Thirsk and surrounding ‘Herriot Country’. A little further afield is the north east coast with its quaint fishing villages and Whitby where popular Whitby Abbey stands majestically on the headland above the traditional working harbour. For the energetic there is good surfing at Saltburn. The North York Moors and Heartbeat country provide stunning scenery and are wonderful for touring. Shops and pub 2½ miles.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Fantastic property - spotless, beautifully done out. Really lovely location for walking, bking etc. Hope to go back. Oct 2012.
  2. We are rather different from most "holidaymakers" as we lived nearby until moving to Oxfordshire less than 2 years ago, and we wanted the Wheelhouse as a base for seeing old friends as well as enjoying the beautiful North Yorkshire landscape. Our favourite bases for walks apart from Swainby, would be Osmotherley (leaflet available from shops), Sutton Bank (leaflets from visitor centre), Rievaulx, and Saltburn, Whitby and Sandsend on the coast. Favourite houses and gardens: Mount Grace, Newby Hall, Beninborough Hall, Castle Howard. Northallerton, Thirsk, Yarm, Stokesley and Helmsley are all attractive small towns. June 2012.
  3. The photos do not do this beautiful cottage justice, it is spacious, tastefully decorated and very well equipped. The huge conservatory was our favourite room with beautiful views over looking the Yorkshire Moors. We loved the fact the cottage is very private at the end of a little road so no through traffic passing by, we only saw 2 walkers going past in the whole week we were there. It was our 3rd visit to this beautiful cottage, every window has a fantastic view, and the beautiful walks all around the cottage were such a bonus. If you are hesitating whether to book The Wheel House, you will not be disappointed, it is hidden gem. We have stayed in lots of cottages over the last ten years and this beats them all. April 2012.
  4. A good base for the moors, a long drive to the coast. Best use this location for accessing the wonderful country side which abounds this cottage was exceptional. Decor and the fittings were exemplary just wish we had longer, historic period features with modern finish. if it were mine I would be reluctant to rent it out, it is so good. Village is quaint, pubs not the best but adequate. By driving up onto the moors behind the property you have access to some of Englands pristine countryside. This holiday made me understand why Yorkshiremen refer to Yorkshire as Gods country. The whole National Park was clean and free of litter, a real joy to behold. I have travelled extensively the whole world and when you experience places like this it makes you think why bother to leave these shores. Please visit, its a beautiful country. March 2012.
  5. The whole experience was excellent! The location, quality of furniture and comfort of the cottage were amazing... Thanks! Oct 2010.
  6. This property has been refurbished to a very high standard and the all around views to the countryside is amazing. The Garden room is amazing with all the old beams and the window seats. The property is quite remote up a narrow lane and once there you are free to roam through the woods and across the moors. Oct 2010.
  7. Cottage very clean and well maintained, well equipped, open, airy and modern. Very peaceful with beautiful views from the lounge. Aug 2010.
  8. Fantastic views fron all windows. The downstairs rooms were huge, much bigger than we expected. Aug 2010.
  9. It is the best property we have ever rented. July 2010.
  10. The Wheel House is furnished to a high standard. The conversion is unusual and unique. The aspect is very rural yet within easy reach of rural towns if travelling by car. A location not to be missed. July 2010.
  11. Fantastic location wonderful views. Everything you needed would love to return. July 2010.
  12. Tranquil, beautifully furnished and equipped to very high standards. July 2010.
  13. Amazing scenery, large reception room with lovely open view of the countryside, not forgetting sheep and the rabbits. June 2010.
  14. Fantastic views. Unusual shaped property, very quiet and secluded. Lots of space and very light and airy. June 2010.
  15. A fantastic property. Accommodation, furnishings, attention to detail, equipped to a very high standard. Would love to return to the peaceful surroundings. What more can I say. Thank you. May 2010.
  16. Light and airy, clean & comfortable. May 2010.
  17. The Wheel House is set in a fabulous location, beautifully presented and equipped and we will definitely hire this cottage again. May 2010.
  18. Presentation & location - just perfect. April 2010.
  19. Spacious, good quality kitchen utensils. April 2010.
  20. We loved the peacefulness, the space, the warmth, great kitchen to sit round the table and well-equipped. March 2010.
