Property Description

"Breathtaking views over the Sound of Seil"

In a magnificent setting by the sea, Ardmaddy Castle sits in its own bay with unrivalled views over Seil Sound and the world famous local Slate islands, designated one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas. Graded ‘4 Star’ by the Scottish Tourist Board, these four cottages (SBZ, SRW, SRX and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) are set in secluded, peaceful locations around the estate and offer an ideal base for exploring this stunning part of the West Coast of Scotland.
The castle’s spectacular gardens are open all year round through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and are a delight for gardening enthusiasts. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife with porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks, otters, deer, eagles and wealth of seabirds often seen. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. There is also a central games room with table tennis, darts and a pool table, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) and The Stables (SBZ) have their own games room. Guests can also use the castle’s tennis court.
The bustling harbour town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Islands’ is only 12 miles away and has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops and bars. From Oban there are boat trips to the Inner Hebridean Isles, including Mull, Iona, Staffa, Colonsay and Tiree. For the outdoor enthusiast, local activities include horse riding, coasteering, canyoning, canoeing, sailing, diving and golf. Fort William and Glencoe are a short drive away offering very popular climbing and skiing. Explore beautiful gardens and ruined castles in an area rich in historical legacy or take a leisurely walk or cycle along one of the many forest tracks. Visit Bonawe Iron Works, Cruachan Hollow Mountain, the Sealife Centre and Inveraray Jail. Or relax and enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty surrounding the cottages at Ardmaddy. Shops 12 miles, pub/restaurant 2½ miles.

This immaculate and sensitive conversion of the former stables overlooks Ardmaddy Bay and is furnished to Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard. Modern and comfortable, it still retains much of its traditional character and warmth. The accommodation is all on one floor. Entrance hall to spacious, open-plan living area. The modern, comprehensively equipped kitchen with ceramic cooker leads through the dining area into the sitting room. Here there is an open fire and patio doors overlooking the sea. Four bedrooms; one double with 5ft bed, two twin and one bunk with full-size bunks and additional Z-bed (for +1). All are tastefully furnished and have fitted cupboards. Bathroom with toilet and handrails. Shower room with toilet. Drying cupboard. Upstairs the former granary forms The Stables’ own games room with a small snooker table, table tennis and darts.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We were very impressed with the location and the standard of the accommodation and spent a wonderful weekend at Ardmaddy with overseas visitors who were also favourably impressed. Gloriously secluded and very comfortable yet within easy access of Oban and al that it offers. Beautiful gardens at the castle and some lovely walks nearby. I would definitely return here again for a longer spell. May 2011.
  2. Homely, great views, well equipped, great for dog walking. Oct 2010.
  3. The Stables, which is a large, well-designed house suitable for a family as well as singles, overlooks a beautiful bay on the west coast of Scotland. The property on which it is located is stunning. My grandchildren, who are quite young, were able to play in the yard happily for hours. The setting is quiet, secluded, and far away from the hustle and bustle of our city home. We had a wonderful time. June 2010.
  4. Beautiful, peaceful setting. Spacious living area. Lovely views. May 2010.
  5. Peaceful, scenic location. Well ordered accommodation. April 2010.
  6. You can feel any stress you have disappearing as you drive through the castle gates. May 2009.
  7. Fantastic property. Extremely well equipped. Absolutely fabulous holiday. Feb 2008.
  8. Great accommodation including the games room in the attic conversion. Feb 2008.
  9. Excellent kitchen equipment. Aug 2008.
  10. The accommodation was extremely well furnished and was excellently equipped. March 2008.
  11. This is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets. May 2008.
  12. I know that I haven’t given any negative feedback, but that’s just the way it is, we all had a really great holiday. The accommodation suited us "down to the ground". The views, especially from the top of the hills are breath taking. Oct 2008.
  13. As you will gather from my responses, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the stables, my husbands comment is that "you cannot improve on perfection, only change it" The standard of the cottage and the idyllic location provided tranquility, perfect views across the loch generated a feeling of space and freedom. The facility to wander anywhere on the large estate meant that we could target our walks to our abilities, be it a gentle stroll around the loch or a more challenging hike into the hills. The welcome to the cottage was friendly, even phone calls to make sure everything was ok and to advise us of anything that may affect our stay. In summary -1st Class. Aug 2007.
  14. The views from all windows of the property were amazing. The games room was fun, and very well laid out. March 2007.
