Set peacefully amidst the scenic landscape of the Exmoor National Park, this spacious Victorian cottage enjoys breath taking country views from its superb hillside position. Formerly the school serving the villages of Oare, Brendon and Countisbury, it has been carefully converted to offer a high standard of well-equipped, quality accommodation, whilst retaining a wealth of original features. A memorable holiday base, The School House is ideal for large family get-togethers whatever the season, and there are plenty of opportunities to soak up the atmospheric appeal of R.D. Blackmore’s wild Doone Country. Boasting its own secluded terrace area, which is perfect for outdoor wining and dining, visitors can choose to relax, explore the thousand-acre estate or stroll down beside the stream to the nearby Staghunters Inn in Brendon. A haven for any wildlife enthusiast, it stands above herb-rich south-facing slopes that are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Exmoor Natural History Centre is close by, with the Exmoor Zoological and Bossington Wildlife Parks further afield. In addition to sandy beaches at Saunton and Woolacombe, there is a vast array of historical sites to be explored. For days out, visit the National Trust properties at Arlington Court, Watersmeet, Dunster Castle and Knightshayes as well as Marwood Gardens, Williton Tropiquaria and the unique water-powered cliff railway joining the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (3 miles). There are other shops at Porlock (8 miles), Minehead (14 miles) and Barnstaple (20 miles), with its weekly market. Boat trips to Lundy Island depart from Ilfracombe, and there are facilities for fishing, pony-trekking, tennis and golf closer to home. River fishing and grazing for horses are available by arrangement. There is a full-size table tennis table in case of wet weather and a piano with a collection of music.

  1. Excellent location and lovely spacious accommodation for our group of 6 adults and 4 children (aged 6 months - 8 years). June 2012.
  2. An ideal setting for a large family gathering, spacious accommodation and large outside area for quiet socialising with beautiful views. The piano and table-tennis were an added bonus for those times we chose to stay indoors, also the large supply of games and toys for the children. The downstairs bedrooms were ideal as the family area - double for mum/dad and bunks/single for the two small boys. It was quiet and secluded enough to put the boys to bed and not have them disturbed by the grown-ups in the lounge!! The upstairs rooms were all roomy and well equipped. We had no problems catering for 10 and we liked the fact that the kitchen was open plan to the lounge so we could still all be chatting whilst the cooking was being carried out. The wi-fi, large TV with Sky and general atmosphere of the house made us feel at home straight away! May 2012.
  3. A lovely house with plenty of room for groups of adults and children/teenagers. Extremely well-equipped kitchen. Table tennis table, barbecue, ipod dock, Wi-fi in the house, so the teenagers were particularly happy! Dog-friendly - a dog bed was provided which was an added bonus. Lovely coastal walks nearby, pubs a short drive away, with one a healthy walk down the stream. Hazel, the agent, was very welcoming. Feb 2012.
  4. This property is set in a fabulous location without any neighbouring properties and with a lot of fantastic walks from the property taking in at least two or three pubs on the way. It suited our extended family of 10 perfectly, accommodating two or three (up to 5!) additional visitors for shorter periods of time. It provided a perfect base to explore the North Devon coast, the wilds of Exmoor and to experience the delightful North Devon hospitality (including cream teas at Watersmeet!). We cannot recommend it too highly although would like to keep it as out little secret hideaway! Aug 2011.
  5. The school house is an excellent property for a large group. My family and I only had one complaint and that was that the oven was too small for the size of the house. The scenery around the house is superb. My family and I certainly enjoyed our week there. May 2011.
  6. Superb location in Exmoor national park, great walking right from the door and an easy stroll down the hill to the pub. Good big kitchen too, great for catering for the group, and nice to have table tennis as an option for rainy days. Dec 2010.

  13. The house was large and clean with good internal facilities. A bunch of flowers and bottle of wine was a very nice welcoming touch. Kitchen well appointed and had all the tools that would be required. The only niggle would be that the bedding was a light-weight duvet and cheap pillows. A bit more attention to a better quality bedding would improve things. All-in-all, though a lovely place and a super holiday. Oct 2009.
  14. The School House is perfect for a large family party of mixed ages such as ours (3 - 65 years). We all had a wonderful time and the school room with its vast dining table and sofas and open-plan kitchen create a wonderful space for everyone with a stunning views over the fields to the moor. We loved wandering down through the fields with our 2 Labradors to the village every day. April 2009.
