Property Description

In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, these converted listed barns are set in an L-shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. They offer an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. They are all renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, are tastefully furnished, and have use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. They can be booked individually or together so are ideal for family get togethers. Though set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), the owner would be delighted to show guests around the farm, which is only a short walk away from the cottages. There is also a small flock of sheep and chickens in the cider orchard close by. There is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby, horse riding, and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far. Shop 400 yards, pub 1 mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. An ideal property for a family holiday. There were 6 adults, 2 dogs and a toddler in our party and all participants had a very enjoyable and relaxing time. Sept 2012.
  2. The Old Stables provided us with a great setting for our mums 60th birthday. The kitchen was the main focal point for our long weekend and we were very impressed with the layout of the accommodation and the quality of the fit-out. Very impressed! June 2012.
  3. This beautiful property provided the perfect getaway for a family with a dog! Great size accommodation, fantastic access for dog walking and great location for accessing places of interest in Both Dorset and Somerset. Very well managed and kept property, the games room was a hit with kids and adults alike. Would most definitely visit this property again. April 2012.
  4. Very comfortable cottage, warm and well equiped. village very quiet, plenty of walks around and in good location for many attractions. Wetroom good for older children and adults but caused a problem for us as had an under 5 with us. April 2012.
  5. Ideal property for our needs with infirm parents. Blessed with excellent weather so garden furniture would have been nice. Excellent kitchen but lounge little cramped (especially if 8 there). Needs better lounge seating. Ideal for dogs and good easy walking outside the door. Better organised (and not dog eared) cottage information and tourist info would be good. Would recommend without hesitation. March 2012.
  6. Very clean, lovely accommodation, only fall back was the Internet - could not connect as advertised. Sept 2011.
  7. Lovely, spacious cottage in a stunning rural location. Breakfast in the garden with views of rolling green fields was bliss! Country walks start at the back gate and there are lots of attractions within driving distance. There is also a charming pub with excellent food in walking distance. Perfect. July 2011.
  8. We chose this property for a birthday celebration and we were not disappointed. The location, quality and cleanliness of the property were beyond reproach. We would recommend the Old Stables to everybody and will be definitely returning as soon as possible. May 2011.
  9. Fantastic sized kitchen/communal space. Comfy sofa which was just the right size for 8 of us. Very nice country setting. Dec 2010.
  10. Finished to a high standard, good sized rooms, very warm. Oct 2010.
  11. Very high quality throughout. May 2010.
  12. When we first walked in the first thing we said was wow! It was a fantastic property with everything you could need decorated to a high standard in a lovely location. April 2010.
  13. As new well laid out. April 2010.
