Property Description

This delightful former rectory dates back to the 1720s and adjoins the owner’s home within beautiful landscaped grounds in the pretty hamlet of Thornhaugh. Used during the 1940s by the ladies of the Land Army, The Old Rectory retains many original features including mullion windows and attractive architraves, whilst the imposing landing is adorned with ‘big game’ trophies. The Old Rectory provides a perfect holiday base for exploring all this beautiful area has to offer.
At its heart lies Rutland Water, which attracts visitors worldwide for bird watching, fishing and water sports. There is an abundance of excellent walks found locally with the Jurassic, Viking and Macmillan Ways to explore. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon is to browse around Barnsdale Gardens, designed by the late Geoff Hamilton.
The area is full of historic towns such as Stamford, 5 miles, which has been given conservation status. Once an important wool town, it has retained much of its old world charm and prosperity. Several of the buildings are of old Lincolnshire limestone, giving the town a fine appearance. There is much of interest in Stamford, including the Meadows (a pleasant place to picnic), All Saints’ Church and the picturesque Barn Hill behind it, as well as All Saints’ Brewery and Stamford Arts Centre, which has one of England’s earliest provincial theatres. Other towns of interest are Melton Mowbray, Oakham and Uppingham. Peterborough is 11 miles offers many amenities, including its magnificent cathedral. There are also many shops, restaurants and bars as well as theatres, cinema and greyhound stadium.
Pretty villages with country inns serving real ale and excellent food can be found within a pleasant drive and make the perfect place in which to unwind after a day’s sightseeing. Shop and pub 1 mile.

  1. The main sitting room and the front garden are spacious -- ideal as we had 4 children in the party. March 2012.
  2. Lovely property well equipped but can be a little chilly bring warm clothes. Dec 2011.
  3. Fantastic property! Owners do live in the other half of the house so you need to be aware of the noise levels, but they were very accommodating in that respect! Very friendly and helpful owners and I would certainly recommend it to anyone. Dec 2011.
  4. A very good venue for a larger party. Clean, comfortable, spacious. The stuff animals where a bonus! Nov 2011.
  5. Absolutely stunning house, so much bigger than it looks in the pictures, clean, spacious, definitely use again as a family get together venue. June 2011.
  6. Loved the animals, although they were a little too friendly for taller members of party, got fit with all the stairs and the below stairs staff quarters were great for younger daughter! Lounge was great and gardens. The area had more to offer than we expected. Loved the phone box in the village as a book exchange. Great place for a family celebration. April 2011.
  7. Beautiful place, just perfect for our extended family break. Would definitely recommend to anyone. May 2011.
  8. This property provides very spacious accommodation with great character. It coped with our party of 10 (incl 2 small children) very well. Dec 2010.
  9. Beautiful and interesting. Great for small children too. Nov 2010.
  10. Rooms as described on website. Owner helpful when contacted. Accommodation clean. Beds extremely comfortable. Nov 2010.
  11. Amazing venue. So well kept. Front of house is beautiful and the decor inside has not been cheaply done. Brilliant, will be going again! Oct 2010.
  12. Huge, plenty of room for all. Sept 2010.
  13. Good comfortable bedrooms and lounge. Very spacious and able to accommodate our family and friends easily. June 2010.
  14. It was a lovely large house with big rooms and plenty of space. We were all able to sit round the table together. April 2010.
  15. My friends and I thought the Old Rectory was wonderful. it far surpassed our expectations and the pictures on your web site didn’t really do it justice. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property and would most definitely return for another visit which has already been discussed with my friends that I went with. All in all a great weekend away. April 2010.
  16. It had everything we needed for a great holiday. April 2010.
  17. Full of character, lots of room for everyone, lovely village location. Jan 2010.
  18. The furnishing was amazing - especially the huge curtains in the lounge with their folds and swags, and the window seats. We felt very special, staying there! The kitchen was extremely well-equipped: we hosted a large family lunch for 15 people, and there was everything we could possibly have needed already there. The only problem was heating, which didn’t work in one bedroom, (though the owner did supply an electric heater, which we had to use quite a lot) and we were cold until the house warmed up - it would perhaps have been helpful if the owner had turned on the heating a little earlier so that it was warm when we arrived. We admit that the first arrivals were early, but it was evening before we were all comfortably warm. Jan 2010.
  19. Spacious and grand. Sept 2009.
  20. A fantastic property which more than lived up to the description on the website. Will definitely stay there again. March 2009.
