Property Description

Nestling under the Coniston Fells in the heart of the Lake District National Park, this group of delightful holiday cottages (refs LD3, LD4 and LP1) are converted from a 17th-century barn and form a quaint hamlet-style setting with superb open views. Torver is a small picturesque village 3 miles south-west of Coniston in a beautiful and romantic valley, surrounded by spectacular scenery. The village is welcoming, warm and friendly and has two pubs serving good food (660 yards). The area abounds with woods, crags, streams and waterfalls, and is home to a wealth of wildlife including squirrels and deer. Walks from the doorstep lead directly to Coniston Old Man and the shore of Coniston Water where there are picnic and paddling areas. Coniston village is a famous centre for walking, climbing and cycling, and boats may be hired on the lake, as well as trips taken on the Victorian steam yacht Gondola. Windermere, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Beatrix Potter’s Sawrey are within a scenic drive giving stunning views of mountains and lakes in every direction. Superb visitor attractions such as the Lakeland Motor Museum, Dalton Wild Animal Park with its Sumatran tigers, Aquarium of the Lakes and the Haverthwaite to Lakeside Steam Railway at Lakeside are easily accessible. The area is rich in historic houses and gardens including Muncaster Castle, Holker Hall and grounds, Sizergh castle, Levens Hall and topiary gardens. Shops 2 miles, pub ½ mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. The woodburning stove is easy to light if you use kindling and the living room gets very cosy and warm, but the rest of the cottage feels cold after you have been in the warm room. There is always plenty of hot water and the bath and shower were excellent. May 2012.
  2. The pictures on the website do not do this cottage justice. It is much more spacious than it appears in the photos. We took 2 large dogs Weimeraners, and there was plenty of room for their large crates in the bedroom. It is spotless and well equipped, it has a large enclosed garden and is short walk to an amazing Pub - the Wilson Arms where a warm welcome is guaranteed and the food is exceptional. there were numerous fabulous walks from the doorstep. April 2012.
  3. Excellent location for tavelling around the lakes beautiful cottage very cosy area very dog friendly views amazing owner of cottage very welcoming and pleasant. April 2012.
  4. Cosy, comfortable and great for two. Feb 2012.
  5. The Old Dairy is a lovely end of terrace stone property which suits 2 people beautifully. We were warm, and generally everything was in good repair. We were able to accommodate two dogs which was a real bonus and the bed was comfortable. The old stone pavement outside being original is very higgledy piggledy and despite a warning in the house book, it is so slippery in the wet that it has to be used very gingerly. Torver is a beautiful area and we had an excellent holiday at The Old Dairy and would go back (tomorrow, if we could). A definite accommodation to repeat; it suited us well. Oct 2011.
  6. Lovely cottage and location. Great for the dogs too! Would certainly return! July 2011.
  7. The property was quite small especially the sitting room. However we liked it because it was dog friendly and this is exactly what we needed with our borderline nuts border collie. July 2011.
  8. The Old Dairy Cottage is a lovely barn conversion and is a lot more spacious inside than the photos would have you believe. Every luxury is included - dishwasher, washing machine/dryer, microwave, oven, TV, DVD etc. The only bad point was the smoky smell in the front room which I would guess was from the previous guests using the log burner. It was easy to find though and has beautiful views from the front of the property. It is only 5 minutes drive from the nearest town of Coniston and about 35 mins from Keswick, which has a great market on a Saturday. Coniston is a lovely little town/ village too and Coniston Waters is a nice place to chill out and relax. June 2011.
  9. Beautiful and romantic scenery, ideal for walking. Lovely to come back to the cosy cottage and fireplace after long walks as the weather was not very good but it didn’t stop us doing what we wanted to do. Pretty villages, out of time and stress. Cultural interest as well with museums and visits of authors’ homes. Great holiday! May 2011.
  10. A surprisingly large cottage which was well situated for a walking holiday in the Southern Fells. March 2011.
  11. Dishwasher, washer/dryer, wood burning stove. Oct 2010.
  12. It was what it looked like on the web site, lovely scenery, great for dog walkers. Oct 2010.
  13. The property was well situated, away from the road with excellent views. Peaceful and quiet. Aug 2010.
  14. Excellent location, comfortable cottage with good facilities. March 2010.
  15. We loved relaxing in front of the wood burner after been walking all day. Jan 2010.
  16. We loved the location and the pubs and the bath and the comfy bed. Jan 2010.
  17. We liked the kitchen the little table to eat together was cosy and the washing machine and tumble dryer were essential as got very wet and muddy most days out walking. Sept 2009.
  18. The cottage was quaint and the location was ideal for relaxing and also visiting other locations. Aug 2009.
  19. It was a cosy cottage for two. What you needed was there. We liked being together with the other properties. Aug 2009.
  20. Coniston is a superb centre for a holiday in this area and the Dairy cottage is good in that it is away from the busy town centre. Car is necessary or bikes. Dog friendly with good walks close by.. Nice being at the end of a run of cottages meaning that nobody came past ours! Lovely old dairy features. Aug 2009.
