Property Description

The Old Chapel Retreat, a charming, detached, 19th-century chapel has been skilfully restored to retain much character and charm throughout. It provides quirky, clever holiday accommodation whilst retaining some original stone floors and walls. Perfectly located in the heart of this pretty picture postcard village with quaint inns and tearooms, and family butcher. Within walking distance is the medieval grand fortress of Raby Castle with its 200-acre deer park surrounding the castle. Barnard Castle, a thriving market town, is only 5 miles with exciting shops and pubs. Auckland Castle, home of the Bishop of Durham and the wonderful nature reserve at Low Barns, is also close by. Beamish Museum lies only 20 miles away where life in the 18/1900s can be relived in this working museum. Motor enthusiasts may like to visit Croft Circuit only 12 miles. Durham city, only 17 miles, has a magnificent castle dating back to 1072, a beautiful cathedral, fine shops, galleries and eateries. Try a day exploring the magnificent Roman Wall country in Hexham and Corbridge, easily reached in under an hour and close to the Pennines. A little further venture to Northumberland taking in the magnificent heritage coastal route, stopping off to see Alnwick and explore the castle used to film Robin Hood, Harry Potter and Elizabeth. Meander through the cobbled streets, or visit the enchanting Alnwick Gardens with one of the largest Treehouse restaurants and water fountains. Relax with a drink and barbecue in the enclosed courtyard area after a day out exploring this exciting area or head up to the top floor for a relaxing game of pool in the games room. Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. There were eleven of us staying at Chapel Retreat during our break, including five children, at no point did we feel overcrowded! The dining room where we could all sit down and eat together was fantastic. The Children claimed the games room as their own and loved it! April 2012.
  2. It was a lovely house, very clean and had gorgeous fixtures and fittings. The local shop over the road is very handy, and the local pub (the black swan) served very nice food. The weather was good for us (it was early March) and we went star-gazing in the park down the road, which was wonderful. March 2012.
  3. Excellent property for family holidays, excellent accommodation, plenty of space, would recomend it to family and friends. March 2012.
  4. This is a particularly well equipped property down to SHARP knives and champagne flutes! There were ample fluffy towels and spare tea towels and tablecloths. We had taken games for the chldren to play but did not need to unpack them. Dec 2011.
  5. Excellent location for walking etc, and 2 local pubs The Wheatsheaf and The Black Swan, very inviting and comfortable. Oct 2011.
  6. Very spacious and well appointed great for large family gathering. Sept 2011.
  7. The Old Chapel Retreat is a beautiful property and after spending a fabulous weekend there, I have already recommended this to several friends. It is well equipped, stylishly decorated (in particular the elegant dining room), and the games room was a huge hit! June 2011.
  8. It was a beautiful property with plenty of room for everyone. Fantastic amount of equipment etc. Games room was ideal for the children (and adults). Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. May 2011.
  9. Fabulous property. Good to have a large Spar and butchers within easy walking distance, a good cafe across the road and welcoming pub near by. The weather was superb and so the barbecue facilities were very useful. April 2011.
  10. The picures of the Old Chapel Retreat on the website look lovely - and the reality is even better. I would strongly recommend the property, especially for a large party. The games room is great, kitchen well equipped, beds v comfortable; and the owners very helpful. We had a large 80th birthday party, lots of family members coming and going, and the Chapel was perfect for it. There is an excellent butcher in the village, but only a very small Spar supermarket - for a large party, I would strongly recommend getting a supermarket delivery. I did, and was v glad I had. There’s a pretty good Morrison’s in Barnard Castle, though, and some excellent butchers and delis, but most places close early evening. March 2011.
  11. A high standard of accommodation, well thought out, nice touches, perfect! Feb 2011.
  12. The size of all the rooms, especially the dining room and kitchen was just what we needed. We chose this property over others because of the ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms. Oct 2010.
  13. Large Rooms, good location, games room especially excellent. Aug 2010.
  14. Excellent for groups, the accommodation ensures a great atmosphere. Jan 2010.
  15. Unusual, grand, well located, well equipped, loved the games room, flowers and some supplies left for us on arrival and slippers were a nice touch. The owner was very helpful and friendly. Aug 2009.
