Property Description

Situated in the pretty conservation village of Winster, The Old Angel is a former 17th-century coaching inn. Adjoining another cottage, it offers a wealth of exposed oak beams, floorboards and flagstone floors. It also enjoys access to the facilities at Harthill Hall, just 3 miles (5 minutes) away with private use (12.30pm – 2.00pm each day) of the indoor heated swimming pool and sauna.
Opposite is the famous Market Hall (NT) with the village shop almost next door, and local inn just up the road. It makes an ideal holiday base, and is conveniently placed to visit the spa town of Buxton with its opera house. The bustling market town of Bakewell, situated on the River Wye, and crossed by a 13th century five-arched bridge is a good place to visit - buildings of note there include the 13th and 14th-century All Saints Church, with Saxon and Norman stonework. Within easy reach are Matlock and Matlock Bath (complete with Heights of Abraham cable cars), the popular market town of Ashbourne, the plague village of Eyam, Carsington Water with waterspouts, cycling and bird-watching. NT and period properties abound, including Kedleston Hall, Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall. Excellent walking in the Peak District and marked cycle trails. Shops 10 yards.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Great location - next to post office, near a local pub. The front door is difficult to locate as it is behind two large courtyard doors. Oct 2012.
  2. Ideal property for a large family group. We went for a weekend to celebrate my sisters 50th birthday. Well equipped for a party, great pub over the road for Sunday lunch. Robes and slippers were a nice touch. Enjoyed the open fire. Would book again. April 2012.
  3. Lovely, large cottage, perfect for my 40th birthday celebrations. Village shop next door for anything you need, village pub 2 minutes walk for anything else. Lounge big enough for all guests & lovely with the open fire lit. Beware low beams on top floor if you are tall & remember to duck! Great time was had by all & wouldn’t hesitate to return again. March 2012.
  4. Full of character in a charming vilage, strategically located next to he village shop and close to the excellent village pub. July 2010.
  5. This was ideal for a large party and in a lovely village. The only warning is beware you don’t bang your head on a low beam (as one of our party did!) It would not be suitable for anyone wanting a garden but the BBQ facilities were ideal. July 2010.
  6. Clean everything we needed ie crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment plus dishwasher and cleaning materials. May 2010.
  7. With a large group it was lovely to be able to sit around the kitchen table and have lots of room likewise in the larger lounge. April 2010.
  8. Good central heating. Well provided kitchen and bedrooms. Nice welcome basket. Oct 2009.
  9. Loads of character in a beautiful location. Good privacy for a party of 12. May 2009.
  10. We liked the location, the shop next door, and the accommodation was good. July 2009.
  11. Lovely property, very charming and the setting is superb. Great to spend the evening playing games round the dinner table. Feb 2008.
  12. Beautiful converted pub with buckets of character. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend here. Feb 2008.
  13. Accommodation was really good, especially for a large group. Very enjoyable! Oct 2008.
  14. Spacious property which afforded a high level of privacy due to the number of bathrooms. Warm and cosy. The large walk in larder was a godsend when catering for a large party. Sept 2007.
  15. The Old Angel was a fantastic location, the holiday was brilliant, excellent facilities and great for a big reunion like ours and throughly enjoyed by all! Feb 2007.
