Property Description

"Breathtaking views over the Sound of Seil"

In a magnificent setting by the sea, Ardmaddy Castle sits in its own bay with unrivalled views over Seil Sound and the world famous local islands, designated one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas. Graded ‘4 Star’ by the Scottish Tourist Board, these four cottages (SBZ, SRW, SRX and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) are set in secluded, peaceful locations around the estate and offer an ideal base for exploring this stunning part of the West Coast of Scotland.
The castle’s spectacular gardens are open all year round through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and are a delight for gardening enthusiasts. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife with porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks, otters, deer, eagles and wealth of seabirds often seen. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. There is also a central games room with table tennis, darts and a pool table, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) and The Stables (SBZ) have their own games room. Guests can also use the castle’s tennis court.
The bustling harbour town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Islands’ is only 12 miles away and has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops and bars. From Oban there are boat trips to the Inner Hebridean Isles, including Mull, Iona, Staffa, Colonsay and Tiree. For the outdoor enthusiast, local activities include horse riding, coasteering, canyoning, canoeing, sailing, diving and golf. Fort William and Glencoe are a short drive away offering very popular climbing and skiing. Explore beautiful gardens and ruined castles in an area rich in historical legacy or take a leisurely walk or cycle along one of the many forest tracks. Visit Bonawe Iron Works, Cruachan Hollow Mountain, the Sealife Centre and Inveraray Jail. Or relax and enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty surrounding the cottages at Ardmaddy. Shops 12 miles, pub/restaurant 2½ miles.

Originally the gate house on the private road to the castle, this comfortable property has been refurbished to Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard, whilst retaining much of its character. Steps to entrance and small, well-equipped, fitted kitchen with ceramic cooker. Small, cosy sitting room with dining area and open fire with back boiler. Twin bedroom. Double bedroom with 5ft bed and wash basin. Both bedrooms have built-in units. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Porch leading to an enclosed, well-kept garden with views over the glen.

  5. An excellent location. The grounds of the castle are great with no undue restrictions. Lovely walks from the property and a nice welcome from Jan the cottages manager. Great for dogs. Good base for exploring the area. Wonderful to get away from it all with no sound of cars, aircraft etc. April 2012.
  6. The cottage is small and intimate, and feels very secluded and quiet. It is well-kept, and the log fire is a lovely feature in winter evenings. The landscape round about is interesting and well worth exploring. March 2012.

The location is ideal close to a river, waterfall and Ardmaddy Castle gardens and bay. The landlord was very friendly and co-opeartive and we were welcomed with a pot of tea waiting to be made and biscuits on a tray as well as a roaring log fire. April 2011.

  15. This property was exceptionally clean. I would suggest mention is made of freezer food, including bread and milk being available. Also, I would suggest a photo of rear facing lodge showing the space around it. April 2008.
  16. A Retreat for The Senses - a wonderful get away from it all holiday. Stunning scenery. Location was marvellous. The frozen meals available were excellant. Just note that the local pub at the Atlantic bridge only opens at 5.30 in November and has food only Saturday & Sunday. Didn’t stop us having a great holiday. Thank you. Nov 2006.
